"Lazy Lebowski Loses Rug"

Wes Anderson is what I would call a Marmite director. Either people would absolutely love his movies and recognise his skill in directing and such, or they think the movies are stupid, and too cerebral. There is hardly any middle ground in this, I think.

So that is what I could describe this movie in a way. It is a Marmite movie. I cannot see people going "Meh, it was alright". I just see people either loving it or hating it and I am in the former. I think it is a funny quirky movie which brings out great performances from Jason Schartzmann and of course Bill Murray. The story is this under achiever who does too much after school clubs in a priviliged school has fallen smitten for a teacher. He tries to woo her in extraordinary ways, such as building an aquariam and reinstating Latin. However there are some obstacles in the way, and that is Bill Murray's character and the protagonist youthful age. This brings out the vindicitve side and tries to compete with Bill Murray for the love of the teacher.

I really enjoyed the movie and I really connected with the main character. He was a guy who wanted to be cerebral, but was not academic smart. He was a dreamer, but did not know where he wanted to go, apart from Rushmore, his old school. He was stuck in one place, and somehow I really felt for him. Even though, this character was a lying, insecure jerk, to use the parlance of the times, I really wanted him to win.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this movie and I might consider buying this for my DVD collection

Hate marmite, but love Rushmore, more than so 'Tenenbaums'. (Haven't seen 'Steve Zissou' though.. Bill Murray is excellent, and the film is so quirky and unpredictable, you just have to enjoy the ride and see what unfolds.

I bought it, and have watched it a second time on dvd. 'Nuff said!

Love it! By far Anderson's best work.

I rate Anderson, and I was impressed by Rushmore, but I think Zissou is his best - it suited my sense of humour the best - first rate actors being deeply silly. Even now the thought of Bill in his speedos and Willem Dafoe in his red bobble hat cracks me up.

Vegemite is much better than Marmite. Marmite is for wimps.

I thought Rushmore was okay.

I REALLY liked Zissou. As I began to watch it, I was intrigued. "Are these guys serious? This is a real movie?" As it went along, I began to hope the best for the characters.

It was a hoot in so many ways, not the least of which was seeing Willen Dafoe countercast as Murray's insecure apprentice.

I love them all but I have to say the Tenenbaums was by far my favourite.

Luke Wilson taking his shoe and sock off at wimbledon.

Gwyneth and her false finger and the secret smoking.

and my favourite quote

Royal: I've always been considered an asshole for about as long as I can remember. That's just my style. But I'd really feel blue if I didn't think you were going to forgive me.

Henry Sherman: I don't think you're an asshole, Royal. I just think you're kind of a son of a bitch.

Royal: Well, I really appreciate that.

"Welcome back, Billy Buck"

When I hear "it's cerebral" as an explanation for why I felt a movie was a waste of 90 minutes of my life, I'm immediately reminded of when Dilbert was poking fun at Zippy. Dogbert proclaimed "I'm going to assert my artistic integrity by producing a comic strip that's never going to be funny." (or something like that)

The most inexcusable thing about this film is that Bill Murray's supporting role was one of the single greatest wastes of comedic acting talent I've ever seen. He's just standing there on film, wooden and entirely bored, and he's clearly not playing the "Bill Murray always looks bored and uninterested" character that he perfected in Ghostbusters. No, he looks GENUINELY uninterested, as if he's not sure how his agent ever talked him into taking this gig. I don't know how to reconcile this observation with the fact that it's not the only time he's worked with Anderson.

Aside from that, to me this film was just so...vaccuous. It's not funny enough to be a comedy, and it's not a "dramody" because it has no real point or message. It's just Schartzmann doing a bunch of annoying stunts and acting foolish.
