All voted.
Can't quite believe Sal's "Blood Diamond" review got approved, unless I'm missing something that isn't surprisingly and unnecessarily racist. |

Please read my post in the offensive-vocabulary thread. All is explained (although one has to wonder why you did not think a spade were just a spade...). |

"Were" just a spade? Is this some verb tense I don't know about?
I'll be on pins & needles 'til [sic] you respond. |

It's true that I have lost my native-speaker intuition on the subjunctive. However, because the above equates to "a spade would just be a spade", I think it is valid.
It's rather bizarre that you would be interested enough to ask me such a question. |

I've got to polish up the finer points of my grammar, but I think it's a mis-use of the subjunctive. If it were a hortatory or iussive subjunctive clause it would be correct. But it isn't. I think it fits into the category of Indirect Questions in the subjunctive, but I think they don't take the plural. Shiv, do you know?

Well, it would just be a coincident form to the indicative plural, not actually a plural itself.
However, going back to the main point, I am more than happy to be corrected when wrong, unlike many people around here. |

Yes, I have been thinking about it and I am relatively convinced that I was wrong. However, I would appreciate a link that clearly defines this issue if anyone can provide one. |

Hhmmm, maybe it's equivalent to the 'hypercorrect' usage described here. |

It is very charming that the example given for hypercorrect usage is from a zombie movie produced on a shoestring-budget. |

Weeeeell, what I would say first off is if you are from Leeds, it's a valid subject/verb agreement of the auxiliary verb to be... In several dialects 'he/she/it were' is correct usage. Where be you from, Salopian? (as they might say in Devon). But I think you would have told us by now if you suspected it was dialect.
The subjunctive is not just about the use of the verb form 'were'. It is a 'mood' that indicates possibility, intention, desire for a certain outcome etc. The verb form changes so that the subject/verb agreement appears to be the 'plural' form (as in third person plural agreement where the subject is first person). For example, 'if Bush does not withdraw the troops from Iraq, I suggest he go there himself' (not 'he goes' which is the standard subject/verb agreement)
Salopian's alternative formation of the sentence is 'a spade would just be a spade'. The use of the modal verb 'would' here does not equate to the subjunctive (although modal verbs also express mood of course).
However, it indicates a pattern that clarifies Salopian's intentions of expressing his belief that G-K would just accept the word spade at face value.
However, it is the subject of the sentence that requires the subjunctive. 'In this situation it is required that the spade perform the duties of a bucket'. 'If the spade were to transform into a bucket, more water will be transported quickly' and so on. (I know these sentences are ridiculous, but I'm not having any smart ideas about the activities of a spade which doesn't then get me into the murky subject of why spades are being talked about in the first place)
If it's not dialect, and if, Salopian, you would use 'were' in other similar situations, the linguistic process would be to collect lots of such 'utterances' and work out what the heck is going on! |

Yes, good suggestion (good link). That's what we'd work out if we recorded lots of utterances from you. Since your first instinct was to defend the use, then I would suggest you probably use it often. Use it enough and everyone will be using it!
