I had a decline tonight of the "too generic" variety for the musical version of "Little Shop of Horrors" that amused me a bit. It's not actually a very clever review so I don't really mind throwing it out as I'm sure I can conjure up something with a bit more bite, but I wanted to ask you this question:
What other film am I missing out on that fits the review "Mean, green singing machine"? |

There are machines in Shrek that sing? I didn't see any.
What about that movie Robots? Did it have any machines that sang?

Surely, "machine," in this instance, is metaphorical, and refers to Audrey. And stop calling me Shirley.
When the erstwhile Grandfather of Soul sang that he was a sex machine, I doubt many people thought there was an actual "orgasmatron" in his pants.
This is all moot, mind, if there is an actual singing machine in Little Shop of Horrors. It's been a while since I've last seen that film.

That's generic and "Brat Out Of Hell" isn't?

No, no actual green machines that sing in the film. Unless you count Audrey in a real life sense - there were obviously animatronic elements to make the puppet move, sneer and what-have-you.
I guess Shrek would just about scrape it, but it's pushing it slightly seeing the tiny amount of singing that he does to my memory is not exactly the key point of the film (as opposed to LSoH actually being a musical). He's also not particularly mean. |

How about "The Muppet Movie," or any other film featuring that melodious amphibian known as Kermit the Frog?

Mean? I'd except "lean, green" maybe. |

Haven't you seen "The Singing Killer Booger?"
I think your rejection is another case of the generic test being "strict" rather than "loose". I've had several rejections where I've thought my review could be stretched to apply to another film but applied most clearly to my film. My guess is some MERPs apply a strict test and some apply a loose test for genericness.
And I don't think Kermit the frog is mean. |

If only. Actually a few power ballads and a chorus line might have improved Ang Lee's attempt immeasurably.

Kermit the Frog is a God amongst amphibians.
So do you think I should resub and hope for a different MERP? There don't seem to be a mass of examples of nasty green musical characters popping up. |
