I know that 52 x 100 = 5200.

What I'm saying is simply this: that just because there is a cap of, say, 100 a week, does not mean people will actually use up that cap for every week in the year. People are busier at some times than others, they go on holidays, they have life events and so on, which makes it extremely unlikely that anyone is going to write 5200 a year based on a max of 100 a week. Because this is so, pointing out that no-one has every produced reviews at 5200 isn't very relevent. After all, as we have all lived until now with no cap at all and no-one has written it!

On the other hand I can write 100 in a week, which is only about 14 a day. It would be a very busy week, but its possible. But I certainly wouldn't see it as my aim to fill up the quota each week.

To put it into perspective, I think I have averaged about 40 accepted reviews per week over the past 19 months. That would probably be somewhere between 50 and 60 submissions per week. And I'm pretty sure that Calmer, TFB and Randall write as fast if not faster than I do, to mention but three.

I was going to a black tie party the other week, and when i mentioned it in work, someone asked me did I have a cummerbund.

One of the lads nearby pipes up: "what's that, a german swingers club?"

Sorry MguyX, you'll just have to keep using your old one for now.

I've been doing my part, for months and months. Can't even remember the last time I wrote a review.

I respect what Benj is trying to accomplish. I've felt a little frustrated with the speed lately, and think a temporary cap will help slow some people down. I mean, geez, save them on a document or something until you've got a chance to submit new reviews.

Amen to that. I welcome the limit and believe it's in the best interests of the site and its users.

I know Benj can do all sorts of clever things using his programming skills, but I'm keen on keeping things simple. Let's not even think about net additions, exemptions for certain categories of films (except the new ones Benj has already mentioned) or anything else that might complicate things. I think a review of progress after about a month (if it hasn't done the trick before then) would be a good idea. Until then, let's sit back and see how things go.

Can people who don't use their quotas auction them off to others via eBay?

Benj, please could you get back to us about whether deleting a pending review from earlier in the week will free up a space? I don't know whether this is what Koli means by "net additions", but it will massively affect my reviewing strategy, as I delete pending reviews all the time, and so I would rather know the policy on this from the outset.

I also frequently edit pending reviews, so I would similarly like to know whether this counts towards the quota for the week in which the edit takes place.

Thanks.

Deleting a review submitted this week will free up a slot in this week's quota.

Updating or deleting a review submitted prior to this week will have no effect on this week's quota.

I'm with Livie - inspiration can strike at all sorts of odd times (at work!!??) so saving them, plus other odd ideas, works for me.

Benj - as somebody else said "do what you gotta do". If it gets the backlog down, especially before you go on your travels, then so be it. It just means the "best" 20 or less will get submitted each week.

I do agree that a note should be put on the FAQs or another prominent place on the site about the cap. There's probably a lot of non-Fourumites who will wonder what's going on. As for submitting 600: that's taking the piss. Took me 4 years to get that far...

Before the submissions cap, I wrote 10-15 reviews per day. It was both my goal and my limit. I have done this for a couple of years now. That's one reason I have accumulated so many published reviews. Slow and steady.

As you with calculators will discern, the cap has cut my daily/weekly/whateverly publishable output by 75-percent-plus. So be it. If the editors can't keep up with our output, then cut the output back. Fair enough. But let everyone play by the same rules. As an accolade fan, I find the new restrictions make it even tougher to attain and hold accolades. But as long as it's a level playing field, so be it.

Bottom line: this site is gobs of fun. If benj wants to change it every once in a while, I will adjust accordingly.
