I'm not saying I think PKMN's avatar is artistic, or even tasteful ... but it's a lady floating in some water. Why would that be pornographic Am I missing something

It's pornographic, because as you have said, it is not artistic or tasteful.

1. I never said it is NOT artistic or tasteful merely that I wasn't saying that it was those things, which, after all, are matters of personal preference. More importantly, they are not constituents of pornography.

2.Online Etymology Dictionary - Cite This Source
pornography 1857, "description of prostitutes," from Fr. pornographie, from Gk. pornographos "(one) writing of prostitutes," from porne "prostitute," originally "bought, purchased" (with an original notion, probably of "female slave sold for prostitution;" related to pernanai "to sell," from PIE root per- "to traffic in, to sell," cf. L. pretium "price") + graphein "to write." Originally used of classical art and writing; application to modern examples began 1880s. Main modern meaning "salacious writing or pictures" represents a slight shift from the etymology, though classical depictions of prostitution usually had this quality. Pornographer is earliest form of the word, attested from 1850. Pornocracy (1860) is "the dominating influence of harlots," used specifically of the government of Rome during the first half of the 10th century by Theodora and her daughters.

salacious 1661, from L. salax (gen. salacis) "lustful," probably originally "fond of leaping," as in a male animal leaping on a female in sexual advances, from salire "to leap" (see salient). Earliest form of the word in Eng. is salacity (1605).

Honestly, Mr S ... I think you're adorable and I really enjoy some of your contributions , but I'm really not sure what you gain by the implication that something is so because you say it is. History ain't on your side in that regard

I don't want to get too heavy here, but you raise important issues about language [and in this case, image] fascism.

imho, there are plenty of things on this site that might offend tender sensibilities -- not mine, you understand -- [e.g. several fairly recent avatars which actually did depict acts requisite to procreation ] but honestly - PKMN's avatar shows a naked lady floating in water. That's it. OK - I probably wouldn't use it. Maybe you wouldn't use it. But if you're going to use a public-access computer to visit a site populated by mature, responsible adults who don't believe in censorship -- are you really saying that we should curtail our postings on the off-chance that someone might be looking over your shoulder?

I hope not. And, more than anything, I hope we can be fwfr-friends who just happen to disagree about some stuff. Here's my cyber-paw -- will you shake on it?

IMO for that to be porn she'd have to be 'tweaking her toggle' or... something would have to be up something... or something.

Having said that, if PKMN's avatar was a naked man I'd be the first clambering for it's removal.

I will shake. I need all the fwfr friends I can get for votes.

I admit that what I find objectionable most people would call tame, probably as a result of my strict Southern Baptist upbringing.

I consider women who pose nude to be prostitutes, because they are selling private areas of their bodies for money. I also believe that David is sacrilegious because it is obviously the pagan god Apollo, and unlike the greeks who de-emphasized privates by making them smaller, david's penis is the focal point of the statue.

My intention was not to offend anyone in this thread. A while ago, though I can not find the thread, but I believe it was Benj that mentioned a non-spoken rule that all pictures in avatars not contain nudity. Maybe it was just for the avatar contests. Anyway, that was 2 1/2 years ago and things might have changed. Although it may be a non-issue, in the US, < 18-year-olds are technically unable to view the site with posts of nude women. Since this site is linked from IMDb with no warning of adult content, this could create problems, although not likely given how little internet laws are enforced and the international courts that one would have to go through, and the small size of the photo. If I am the only one opposed to nudity, then please carry on, as I've made something from nothing. The remedy will be that I do not public access the computer.

Anyhow, you're not alone Shiv... we share the same "space of belonging" well... sans the zen... if that's any condolence to you.
But alas I don't think that some reviewers have a privilage or so, it's just that movies with a load of pending reviews get faster on a accepting repertoar, and some movie piles must go a whole equatorial circle.

Yeah, I know. It doesn't bother me much, although I'm guilty of posting about the 'delays' when I first started. I absolutely do not think there is any favouritism going on.

That's a very interesting point of view.

What do you feel about homosexuality?

So then gays should be able to marry, to avoid living in sin?

PKMN, please change your avatar. I can't tell if there's actually nudity or not, but sometimes I access fwfr from my school's computers, and it just seems creepy to see someone looking at pornography in the library.

I'm presuming it's a still from "Walkabout"

If you think that's offensive check out PKMN's accolade Here
Complete with revolting adolescent masturbatory fantasy.

Given that this is PKMNs thread, I suppose I should write in size 20 font in day-glow green in an attempt to show how important I am. But I'm not that needy.

I wasn't worried about the avatar until I read that.

Oh, what in the world does that have to do with this conversation? Knowing that he was raised Southern Baptist, you must assume that he has opposing views on it which would start WWIII here!
