Shiv?

Frodo really (he's the one 'rambling on') - although Gollum is mentioned in the lyrics.

Here's a great link about the general influence Tolkien's work had on the Zep's lyrics. This is written by a fan, though, so always open to discussion and other interpretations.

Agreed. I know I'm on the minority on this issue, but I like Audioslave better than Rage Against the Machine. To me, the lyrics and themes are much more developed. I also like the lead singer better. Just my opinion though.

I think I had Madness in my original post - Sorry

Frankie goes to Hollywood could probably be included in this list.

Mr Stupid - I am humbled by your knowledge of obscure (to me, anyway) music.

Shiv - I had no idea Ramble On was about LOTR. I shall have to dig out the old tape and listen to it again.

Add Ian Dury and the Blockheads "Reasons to be Cheerful part 3" to the list. It has references to the Marx Brothers and Woody Allen.

Thank you! When I'm not on fwfr, one of my hobbies is to fake being an indie rock snob.

Rosanna and In Your Eyes are about Rosanna Arquette. And has no one mentioned You're So Vain?

Actually I'd heard that she's never revealed who (if anyone) it's actually about, and that there are various candidates including Beatty, Taylor, Jagger etc.

Yep - according to Wikipedia. I knew about Rosanna and was looking it up when I found that one too.

Back in the late 70s/early 80s Canada's MURRAY MCLAUCHLIN wrote and recorded 'What Would Humphrey Bogart Do?'.

Actually, a couple years ago, she participated in a Martha's Vineyard auction, where she auctioned that very secret. Dick Ebersole (TV producer married to Susan St. James) won, at $50,000. The only condition was that he couldn't reveal the answer.

Oh, also: Rock On by David Essex, mentions James Dean.
