Big and Vice Versa
And Like Father, Like Son, and 18 Again.
Then Hollywood did it all over again with The Hot Chick, followed by Freaky Friday, followed by 13 Going on 30.
This also raises the question of, if there's more than two, which two do I choose (for I do want to limit it to pairs).
I think the right way is more similar is better, then in the same year is better. So as far as 1987/1988 age-changing comedies go, I'm going with Vice Versa and Like Father, Like Son.
The Hot Chick/Freaky Friday/13 Going on 30 situation is thornier. Do I go for switching bodies, or changing ages? For now I'll say the latter.

Okay, let's analyze them again.
Over the Hedge and Barnyard really do seem like practically the same movie to me, one just featured suburban wildlife and the other featured farm animals. I think these two films are very similar to each other, if not to all the others. Of course, I didn't see either film so I'm basing all this on the trailers.
Flushed Away and Open Season are both about domesticated/cultured animals that are suddenly forced to live like...well, animals. These two films are also very similar to each other, if not to all the others.
I think you should reconsider The Net and Hackers. While the stories may have been very different, they resulted from identical marketing ideas: a film exploiting the growing interest (and fear) about that "new" thing called "the internet." They may have told different stories to do it, but to me that's incidental because I don't believe anyone involved with either film really cared what the stories were at all. It was just a means to an end.
Finally, in my opinion it's a mistake to rule out Big from the "body swap" pairing, because that was THE body swap hit of the year and the main reason so many more were made (in this case it's clearly a case of copying). I like the guidelines you've given yourself for how to narrow down pairings, but I think you should consider making an exception here (you're entitled...it's your accolade). I would choose Big and Vice Versa because those were the most successful, and (in my opinion) best of all those films. Big might lack the "adult stuck in a child's body" element, but were any of those other films really about that, anyway? They pretty much all focus on what a kid would do if he were stuck in a grownup's body. |

I'm assuming the Harlow pair cited in an earlier post qualify. |

Good ones.
What about Never Say Never Again and Octopussy? Star Trek: The Motion Picture came very close behind Star Wars, and The Wrath of Khan was within a year of Return of the Jedi and had the potential for problems when originally both titles began with "Revenge." |

The Faculty and Disturbing Behavior came out the same year (Students and teachers under some one elses control)
American Dreamz and Man of the Year came out the same year (other people running for president)
Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Resident Evil came out the same year (Chicks in video games)

Thanks for the help everyone! The accolade is now finished. I decided to cap it at 40 films, so I picked the pairs (and a couple of quartets) I liked best (after much self-debate).

Do you think that at some point you could make a post showing all the pairings? Not all are immediately obvious to me, and I'd love to see the method behind your madness. |

Actually all the pairs save one (Photographing Fairies and Fairytale: a True Story) can be found via Mr. Stupid's (insanely helpful) link. |
