Okay, can somebody explain this rejection to me?

The film is Sorry, Wrong Number, a film about a middle-aged female invalid who is murdered by a killer hired by her husband. At end of the film, you get the celebrated line--"Sorry, wrong number"--spoken by the hired assassin to the husband who is calling home in hopes of aborting the murder plot.

My review: "Invalid number."

MERP judgment: rejected without explanation.

Don't know if this will help or not, george, but I often use the "explanation" line in my submission to help with puns, double entendres, etc. In this case, I would have explained the woman was an "invalid," and that the phone number was wrong, and thus, "invalid."

Hope this helps.

Sorry George, it seems very generic.

I would have agreed before the new rule change, I would say this would pass the new generic rule though.

I can only suspect the MERP either didn't understand the review (did you include an explanation?), or felt it was too obscure (I understand 'invalid number' meaning literally 'wrong number' but even after your explanation I struggle with the second meaning. Second meaning of 'invalid' I get, but how does that pair up with 'number'? Disabled number? Physically disadvantaged number?)

Just thoughts, I would try again with an explanation if I were you.

It is the invalid's home that is called (i.e. her phone number). And the killer says "Wrong number." So Invalid number, invalid number. Does that help?

Resubmit it with your explanation.

I don't think it's generic. A review should be understood in the homonym or homonyms it intends, so it is not just saying "wrong number". In the sense of "invalid" as a noun it's not common.

Having said that, this is a review which would not really be weakened if made more specific i.e. Hitchcock's invalid number. That's worth considering.

Although I agree with Bife that the lack of a direct connection between invalid (noun) and number is a weak point in the review, I don't think it should be a breaker.

Also, you might try: Invalid invalid number" or "Invalid's number invalid."

I'd resub it with the explanation. I think it's great.

How could we use the "explanation" line when we submit the first time? It is not possible, right - we can submit an explanation only if a review has been rejected and if we resubmit it. Or am I missing something?

When I've done that, I've submitted the review then go back and click update and add the explanation. It still shows as a first pass.

Oh thanks, had I known this before, it'd have saved some trouble for both me and the MERPs.
