It is very popular in Four Your Consideration threads for people to post hints to their reviews; a practice I detest, yet have to live with. Apart from being blatantly obvious and/or incredibly condescending ("so that's what Citizen Kane is about"), these "hints," more often than not, spoil wonderfully witty reviews. Which is where this thread comes in.
Below is a link to a review of mine for Wonder Boys. The first person to get what it is should post an explanation of the review, and then post a link to one of their slightly obscure reviews. The person who figures that one out posts a link themselves, and the circle continues, providing a platform for more esoteric reviews.
Wonder Boys PS. This is clearly not an alternative to the FYCTH rounds; nor am I saying that people should stop posting hints there. I would prefer it that way, obviously, but I can also try and avert my eyes for the sake of congeniality. I am such a martyr.

I haven't seen this in a while, so a shot in the dark....does it refer to the Monroe item of clothing? |

No, it doesn't. Even though Michael Douglas's character's life goes through profound changes throughout the course of the film, the review is saved from being generic by one very specific part of the film.

I don't take a blanket view on hints. There are too many of them for my taste, but on the other hand on the last FYC I put in a review for Dr X (1932) of X, Wrays.
After a slow start I put in a hint that the film starred both Fay Wray and John Wray and after that it garnered a lot of votes.
Clearly this hint was necessary for people to appreciate the review, so where's the harm?
Incidentally my all-time hilariously condescending hint was the less than esoteric information that "A group of lions is called a pride". Wow! If only my parents had sent me to school I might have known that without having to be told...

That was prob'ly me! I think at the time I was getting a lot of "don't understands" in my declines, so was being ultra-cautious. Or would that be snide? My bad!

It's a good job we don't accept uncorroborated confessions around here, coz you it wasn't.
But I suppose it could have been.
Just joking there, Baffs.

Don't get me wrong - I am happy just not reading them. I also mean no offense at fellow members who do provide them. I pimp my reviews like nobody's business, too, but it's a shame when people have to sabotage a great review of theirs just to grab a few more votes.
Think about, say, BiggerBoat's wonderful Bruce Almighty review, "Am A Deus." The initial appreciation of its brilliance would be completely squandered were one to initially encounter a fairly pedestrian hint that might have gone: "Deus means God. God hands down all his powers to Jim Carrey in the film. Also, there was a film called Amadeus, about Mozart, who, some believed, was a divine genius." Anyway, back on topic. It's not that abstruse a review so take a guess.

It refers to the Dylan song, the one that won the Oscar.
I don't offer hints in the forum either; not that I'm offended, I just think reviews have to live here without them, so mine ought to start getting in shape.
The only time I ever ignored that rule was for this one. |

Reviews live without hints, but with info such as the director and cast lists which are not directly available on FYC.

Hmmm. I don't get it, but let me think about it.

Yeah, but who goes into every film page when they are going through FYCs? Certainly not me.
Now, was Lassie actually played by a dog rather than a bitch?
Yep, IMDB confirms it was Pal, a dog dog.

You are correct, sir. For production reasons [judging from humans, I guess it's because they mind better], Lassie has always been portrayed by a male dog. benj declined it with "Don't understand," and I reluctantly felt I had to point it out to the peeps when it achieved zip for votes, cause I was proud of it.
See how easy that research was? |

Heh. Cool. Just voted for it.
So, Whipper, let's have a bizarro one from you (oh, not like that, you perverts).
