Randall's posting about Walkabout got me thinking. I agree it's a wonderful film and I love Nick Roeg's work and I often play Fantasy Cinema Manager with some equally film-besotted pals ...

SO ...

If you were a Cinema or Movie Theater manager of a re-run house [ie it doesn't play anything brand new]... what would be your double-bill presentation? They should complement each other, but don't necessarily have to be related in theme.

Continuing from Randall's inspiration, I'll start with:
Walkabout
and
Rabbit Proof Fence

I was once in a cinema in LA that showed a different themed double bill every night. As I sat waiting for that night's double bill to begin (i forget which two films), two extraordinarily pretentious black clad ponytail wearing cineastes behind me were complaining loudly and derisively about upcoming double bills, and I remember at one point overhearing this:

(UTTERED IN VERY EARNEST TONE OF OUTRAGE)

"Look at this, man, next week, Casablanca and Play It Again, Sam. I mean, I like Woody Allen but come on!"

This seemed like a perfect double bill to me. Anyway, other double bills I would like to see:

Any two films by Hal Hartley
Reservoir Dogs and The Killing
Reservoir Dogs and City on Fire
A Matter of Life and Death and What Dreams May Come

The Neverending Story and The Princess Bride

The Official Story and Death and the Maiden

Gone With the Wind and Cold Mountain

Mulholland Dr. and Perfect Blue

And a couple my fiance inspired:

Paris, Texas and Rain Man

Tommy and Forrest Gump

Also worth mentioning is an intriguing idea Jim Emerson (Ebert's editor at the Sun-Times) had - incorporating double bill ideas into the traditional yearly best films list. His picks:

Pan's Labyrinth and Paperhouse
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and Peeping Tom
Man Push Cart and Pickpocket
A Prarie Home Companion and Nashville
The Descent and Dead Calm
The Bridge and Vertigo
51 Birch Street and Capturing the Friedmans
Half Nelson and Old Joy
Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima (admittedly obvious)
Borat and Animal Crackers
Brick and Miller's Crossing

The old fleapit in Roath, Cardiff used to show great double bills of films. I think I saw ( this is over 20 years ago mind )

Halloween with Friday 13th
The Exorcist with Carrie
Fritz The Cat with 1941 (hmm)

Personally, a couple I can think of offhand would be

Harvey with Arsenic And Old Lace
Walkabout with Picnic At Hanging Rock
The Hairdresser's Husband with Cyrano De Bergerac
Gladiator with 300
The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. No comfort breaks, just gimme a bucket of popcorn, a keg of cider and catheterize me.

I saw some great double bills when I worked in a independent cinema back in the late 90s - one that springs to mind was "The Conversation" and "Apocalypse Now" - not particularly complimentary films in tone or content you'd think, but it certainly highlighted the lost genius of F.F.C.
I'd never heard of "The Conversation" at the time, but it's now one of my favourite films.

Also "Some Like It Hot" and "Singing in the Rain" was a great one.

Other double bills I'd love to see-

"Blade Runner" and anything. But to narrow it down maybe "Akira" or "The Matrix".
"Withnail and I" and "This is Spinal Tap"
"The Terminator" and "Robocop"
"Predator" and "Aliens" (AvP really wasn't good enough)

Thought of a great one prompted by another thread -

"The Lives of Others" and "Mephisto"

and while we're on Germany how about

"Wings of Desire" and "Downfall" for Mr Gans?

You guys are really good. I could only think of:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with The Sting

Father of the Bride (1950) with Father's Little Dividend (1951)

Adam's Rib with Pat & Mike

Philadelphia Story with Ninotchka
or for the people who prefer the musical versions
High Society with Silk Stockings

Kiss Me Kate with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Key Largo with The Big Sleep

Just because they're two of the most side-splitting comedies ever, even after your 1,000th viewing:
Porky's and Arthur

The Grown-Men-Cry-at-the-Sports-Flick Combo:
Brian's Song (original) and Field of Dreams

I'd also love to watch "original story/clever remake" combos:
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story
Dangerous Liaisons and Cruel Intentions
Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You

In that vein, how about:

Othello (1995) with O
Twelfth Night (1996) with She's The Man

And don't forget:

Pride & Prejudice with Bridget Jones' Diary
Emma with Clueless
