I just saw this very beautiful Western today on DVD, and when I went to put my two cents in, was surprised that, long after its theatrical release, it was I who wound up adding it to the fwfr database! This means not many, if any, of you have seen it.
You should change that. It is a hearty definite rent.
The fairly simple story, viscerally well told, gains dramatic ground as the backstory is gradually revealed. The wheels wobble in the last half hour as Ford gives way to Jarmusch in the persons of two unnecessarily outre characters. Then they settle on again for the finale.
The cinematography -- in Canada, I presume -- is worthy of the old masters of the West. It's a lovely piece. Not perfect, but you also have Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan both essaying American shitkicker accents, and that's worth something.
I gave it a fwfr rating of four. |
