I agree that Heath Ledger has never looked better, and I'm encouraged by this still because it shows that Christopher Nolan is reinventing the franchise from the ground up. Perhaps if the new Bat-series lasts a third installment, we will see Nolan's take on Catwoman, Riddler, or Penguin. |

I find this oddly reassuring but I'll be surprised if the film (probably aiming for a 12A (at worst) here in the UK) keeps it as dark and twisted as this implies |

That still got me wondering about the rating, too. Here in America, Nolan will probably be aiming for a PG-13 (parental guidance strongly suggested), and from the looks of things, he'll be testing the outer limits of that particular rating. An R rating (restricted; no one under 17 without parent or guardian) would be finacially disastrous for Warner Brothers, so he might have a contractual obligation to deliver a "PG-13" movie.
Roger Ebert has wondered whether the Harry Potter films will be R-rated by the time they reach the end of the series. They've progressed from PG to PG-13, but that leap from PG-13 to R is a big one.

Well, at least we have the 15 rating here in the UK which hasn't always spelt death for films at the box office. However, the UK is maybe 5% (best estimate) all of worldwide box office, so it's unlikely Hollywood gives a hoot about aiming for that
Trouble is, with Heath made up like that, they have to do it dark. Anything less and it'll just come off farcical (I can already see all the "Did Heath do his own make-up?" jokes) |

Actually, I like Heath Ledger. I thought he was brilliant in Brokeback Mountain, but I liked him best in wince A Knight's Tale. For some reason I liked that film. I liked Ledger, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk and Mark Addy. I'm still getting over the fact that Addy is British, I didn't realize this for the longest time. He starred in "Still Standing" on American TV and was quite funny. We won't discuss The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.... |

I'm definitely encouraged by that picture - I was worried when I heard the casting. It makes me hope for a proper Two-face somewhere down the line to erase the piss poor job that Tommy Lee Jones did from my memory. |

PG-13 can translate as 12A or 15 in the UK. It depends on the movie. As long as they keep the gore off-screen, I don't foresee any problems with regards to the film's rating. Besides, implied violence is so much cooler than its literal representation, no?
It sounds like the film will combine storylines from The Long Halloween, Batman: Year Two and The Killing Joke (not to mention the very first Joker comic from the 1940's), and based on the previous film's success, I am confident that the sequel will also be unsettling and dark.

Can't be the killing joke. YOu need Robin for that. |

You're thinking of Death In the Family. There's no Robin in The Killing Joke.

My bad. Sorry. Get storylines mixed up. Batman has too many of the same storylines. |

Yup - I can't argue with you there.
Apart from the iconic storylines like the ones mentioned above, and a few others, the Batman comics have never managed to interest me much.

With other Superheroes you have villians trying to take over the world. With Batman villians, you have people trying to take over the city or other people's minds. Not much you can do with a non-super superhero. Though you do have Batman...the non-superhero who has information that can take down all other superheroes |
