I hope any male FWFRers in their 30s are as psyched as I am about this (females, too...girls are allowed to play with robot dolls instead of Barbie dolls, although I don't recall any classmates that actually did...). I've been waiting over 20 years for this movie, even if I didn't know that until I first heard about it. I just wonder if they can top the animated film, but Unicron voiced by Orson Welles is tough to beat.
These were by far my favorite toys growing up, I loved them even more than my Masters of the Universe collection (I didn't have any of the first generation He-Man and villains anyway, so no matter how big that collection was it could never be impressive). But alas, I grew up with a father that insisted on teaching me the value of a dollar, so what did I get when I asked for Transformers? You guessed it: Go-Bots. That's a horrible thing to do to a kid. But at least my friends all had them so I could play with theirs', including one friend that had not one but several of the most coveted Transformers, including both Megatron and Shockwave, making it possible for us to have gunfights (yeah, I don't see these two toys being considered proper in 2007).

The cine trailers here are terrific ... but I wish they convinced me the film would be that good. There's one really funny exchange with a guy leaning out his top floor window and one of the good transformers. I will see it when it gets here and report back.

I am, but it's a Michael Bay flick and the early word has not been encouraging. I'm still seeing it on its opening weekend, mind.

PG-13 Michael Bay is never a good sign.
I am looking forward to it, but I don't expect it to be good. I wasn't even a Transformers kid growing up, I was a Ninja Turtles/Power Rangers kid. I did see The Transformers animated movie the other day, didn't like it very much but I wouldn't call it a lazy cash-in. A lot of weird, almost Gilliam-esque stuff in that movie. |

My only concern in that regard is that it wasn't until yesterday that I finally saw an ad that showed the rating. It really went down to the wire before it finally got an official rating, and what I'm worried about is that they may have submitted several different edits before they finally got it down to a PG-13 from an R, and that the final edit was a rush job (if I'm right, they spent a LOT of money doing that).
It's not that a movie can't be entertaining if it's not violent and rated R, I'm worried that this is really an R-rated film that was hastily turned into a PG-13 and that the final product could have suffered.
But I really don't care, as long as it has Hot Rod and Starscream. |

I was into all that when I was a kid, but there's nothing that particularly excites me about this - particularly as Michael Bay is probably my least favourite film-maker. The only mild excitement I got was hearing that Frank Welker and Peter Cullen were voicing their respective parts again from the cartoon. But I'm expecting total rubbish, as is the way of the Bay.

I was just a little too old for Transformers as a child - my younger brother by three years had them but my firend s and I were too cool for them I suppose. So there is a huge latent bias in me against this film. I saw a trailer for the film a few months ago and my first thought was this is a joke - they are making a movie out of this?
Transformers was a pretty short-lived toy phenomenon. Unlike Hot Wheels or Barbie, universal right of passage toys, Transformers were really only popular for a few years. Like most 'hot toys' they seem particularly outdated a few years later. |

Ummm...they've never stopped making them. Their popularity has gone up and down over the years, but by no means was it a "fad" that only lasted "a few years." I think you might be succumbing to that bias you admitted to. They're probably not an all-time classic - I wouldn't put them on the same level as Hasbro's other major "action figure" (boys don't play with "dolls," after all) franchise, GI Joe - but they're still one of Hasbro's biggest successes ever. |

I guess my main point is that if you were too old for them in 1984 when they came out, they never became part of your experience. I was 13 and my younger brother was 10 so I was probably out of that market turning my attention at that age from toys to girls and sports. Girls would probably have the same reaction if as teenagers Barbie was released - for most of us Barbie was around during our core toy years, but if you were 13, 14 back then you might have a similar reaction.
Curious if others willing to share their age have similar feelings on this if you were born 1971 or before wonder in Transformers has the same appeal. |

I was seven years old when the miniseries that served as the pilot for the cartoon show first premiered in the United States. I was nine when the movie came out, which was probably where the franchise peaked. But it certainly remained popular after that, and they've put out several more generations of toy lines since.
If you were 13 in '84, that DOES sound too old to get into any kind of action figure toy and the cartoon show meant to market them. But believe me, they were BIG for many, many years...you'd simply moved on by then. |

Perhaps my 21 year old son will enjoy it? He was, several years back, a HUGE mechwarriors and heavy gear player. When he was very young, his favorite film was Robot Jox. His one and only FWFR is there (needzwd40), lol. |
