Seriously, this movie is just as bad as Godzilla '98 or Batman & Robin.
AWWWWWW!!!! NOT EVEN!!!!
B&R was just ridiculous, with too many freaky subplots, character transforming accidents and big named stars crowding each other ever to allow it even to approach passable fantasy action. G98 could have been saved if it hadn't relied at all on the inherent comedy Matthew Broderick brought to it (much like the introduction of Godzuki in the film series really irked me) (not to be confused with any dislike for Broderick).
Again, my friend, I'll just have to disagree. I don't want to defend the movie too much, because it is not some classic masterpiece, thus the more I expound, the more I'd just sound ridiculous. I didn't think it was a silly movie; nor did I consider it a drama. I just liked the damned thing.
But B&R??? Bro, that's a low blow! |

I'm not disagreeing with your analysis of Batman and Robin, I just don't see what makes Transformers any better. What distinguishes the two? |

Loved the First Charlie's movie. never should have been a second. Loved Dukes of Hazzard. I just loved the 80's!
I loved the 1980s Dukes TV show as a kid, but I felt the movie adaptation missed the point. The movie version, to me, felt sluggish and too laid-back, too hip for the room. They were going for a stoner/slacker vibe which just didn't mesh with the TV Dukes supercharged, go!go!go! aesthetic. In that sense, the movie's true antecedent was not the TV show but rather Broken Lizard's Super Troopers, an earlier film by the same director. Many viewers found Troopers hilarious -- and, indeed, many of the scenes and quotes *are* funny out of context -- but I found it disappointingly lazy and unfocused. I had the same basic problem with Dukes. "C'mon, guys. Try a little harder. There's supposed to be a movie happening here."

It seemed the only reason the movie exists is to give whats-her-name some screen time. I was embarassed for Willie Nelson, and that ain't easy to come by. |

If only they were satisfied with just "giving her screen time." But it seems the "writers" (cough) thought a scene of her coming in and making guys go ga-ga over her to get the boys out of whatever trouble they were in was just absolutely hilarious...so they decided to do that same scene 4 or 5 times. And jeez, the car chases...obviously, I expected them. But somehow, they still managed to make it tedious so I eventually started groaning each time a new one began.
The problem is that Dukes of Hazzard really isn't a movie. It's not driven by any sort of plot, it's just a series of gags spoofing the original show. Think about that: an hour and a half of gags spoofing a 60 minute television show. Is it any wonder it got tiresome before it was over? If the whole film is nothing but a series of gags about a whole bunch of different movies, that can work (Date Movie, Scary Movie, et al) ...or if it has some sort of STORY to keep it moving while you're waiting for the next gag, that can work, too. But in the end, it was nothing but a bunch of jokes that could have been shown in any order, meant to highlight and make fun of the repetitive nature of the original television show. And y'know what? It worked. After about 45 minutes of mild amusement - which is how much screentime you'd get out of the show after removing the commercials - I was ready for it to end.
Edit: it also exposed the great scam of "The Unrated Version" DVD. Hey, if it's "unrated," it must be raunchier, right? That means it will be funnier, right? Wrong on both counts. They're not sticking in classic scenes that were just too extreme for a censor...they're including a deleted scene that was deleted simply because it SUCKED and which wasn't part of the original rating process, so it officially makes the whole film "unrated" because that clip was never seen by the MPAA. |

Just for the record, I still voted for Mr. B's review of Transformers because it's still a good review, even if I disagreed with it. |

Man, I never watched any of those shows, including Transformers and Voltron and what have you. I did watch a lot of Ninja Turtles though, and that new TMNT movie was also pretty damn bad. |

I haven't seen the new TMNT movie - nor do I want to - but when you say it was "pretty damn bad," Mr. B, I really have to wonder, "compared to what standard?"
You keep saying you're not going into these movies with unreasonable expectations, but I'm finding that hard to believe. I really think you're just seeing the wrong kind of movies and setting yourself up for disappointment. |
