To stamp out video piracy, at the start of DVDs in Australia a voice-over guy would say, "Have you ever seen a movie that wasn't quite right..." I'd yell back at the screen: "The Avengers" |

Someday I will have to post a defense of Titanic.
And Dead Poets Society also, sinced it was bashed pretty well in the other thread.
Both movies are in my personal top 10. |

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
This film was so bad that when I accidentally flipped over to it late one night searching for something good to watch, it instantly threw me into a state of paralysis so profound that I sat there, remote control clutched woodenly in one hand, my mouth open and eyes so stunned they could not even blink. It wasn't until it was over that I was able to rouse myself from stasis and run to the bedroom, whereupon I hid under the bed for 3 days. It has begun a decade long dependence on Thorazine and I still have to phone my therapist occasionally when the thought of it comes over me.... Excuse me, I must make a telephone call....

Surely among huge piles of dross, Titanic has to be up there (down there?) with the worst of them. How it ever won all those Oscars I shall never know (or care). And to cap it all, they had Celine Dion wailing her heart out at the end.
Summary: A huge pile of utter cack.
YECH!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I nominate "Pearl Harbor!"
You're welcome.
Likewise, thankyou for dropping Pearl Harbor into the mix. As I have stated elsewhere, it's Titanic without the entertaining bits. Fortunately, it's without Celine Dion as well, but that doen't really make it any better.
The Avengers: so bad I'd forgotten all about it. Thankyou, Conan.
Independance Day: Yes, I agree that it is fatuous, over-blown, gung ho, there's-only-one-nation-on-God's-Earth-worth-anything, insult to the intelligence, pile of ordure. Just watching this atrocity makes me anti-American with a vehemence normally reserved for the French. Despite all that, I like it in a switch-off-brain-and-suspend-all-disbelief kind of way.
...the garlic-eating surrender-monkeys on the other side of the channel. France - the world's finest at hosting an invasion. |

Eh, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 has its moments. "Heh heh, dog will hunt!" And let's not forget the moment where Leatherface's chainsaw runs out of gas between his victim's legs and she pets it to make him feel better. Shame about the ending.
The Avengers is certainly not a good movie, either, but I kind of appreciated as a wall of impenetrable noise and weirdness.
Titanic earned every insult it has ever gotten (personally, I don't see how it's overrated at this point, it's more famous as critical whipping boy than critic favorite by now), but there's something about its sincere stupidity that I kind of admire.
The English Patient, however, is as bad or worse than everyone says it is. A true nothing of a movie. |

"Runaway Train"
Should have been an action movie but became pretentious dreck. No one acted with emotions remoted like those of a human being. You know, when they call a movie "Runaway Train" you kinda expect to see the train either stop or crash. But no, the film ends with a helicoptor shot of the two remaining people standing on the roof of the train, still going full speed out of control towards certain doom, then fades to black.
They either ran out of money or ideas. |

Which was a great dissappointment to me as the book is beautiful. |

You've got that right! There's no one who writes as beautifully as Ondaatje. I've read most of his fiction, and some of his poetry. Amazing! "Anil's Ghost" was even better than "The English Patient", so I put "Divisadero" on my wish list at Amazon, the minute I saw it liste. Unfortunately, while I'd love to pre-order the hardcover, I'll probably have to wait to buy it only after it comes out in paperback.

You just did! I'll add it to the accolade v soon! OK, it's in ... but I was assuming you meant the 1997 version. If you meant the 1949 version can you please let me know. TIA!
PS I hope at least some of you are going to attempt The Raspberry accolade with all these wonderful opportunities for some vile and witty FWFRs!

baffy, i think u got a mistake. wildhartlivie nominated The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and u have the original in the accolade. btw, like i've said in another forum thread, i really enjoy TCM2. an awful horror film, but a pretty good comedy. "Leatherface, you bitch! Look what you did to my Sonny Bono wig."
