Very strange choice by the studio. I assume that the artwork is new (since it is for a remastered edition and it would have been really bizarre to give the spoiler in 1968). It is so odd that they wish to take away from viewers' enjoyment.

I think it mistaken too -- I believe you can still spoil, say, PSYCHO for some people -- but Fox must have decided that, like EMPIRE and SIXTH SENSE that you mentioned, the twist has become so much a part of popular culture [endlessly parodied, etc.] that it would remind you of that frisson you felt the first time you saw it and urge you to buy the DVD to relive the feeling. Some similar conversation must have been held in Century City before this art was approved. My point was simply that even the releasing studio feels that this picture should join the two you mentioned as one of those twists that everybody knows, and it's not outlandish for a fwiffer to assume same.

I am sure you are right that the artwork was designed to target people who had seen and enjoyed the film in the past. So it's not so much that the studio thought everyone knew the twist as that they didn't care about the people who didn't. F.W.F.R.ers should therefore be a bit more careful.

However, I expect you are right that more people would know this twist than e.g. The Usual Suspects. N.B. I don't know the twist in Psycho either.

Likewise. And thanks all - it's been a good round for me (as both a giver and recipient of votes)

Just here as a voting lurker.

You shouldn't be too grateful because:
it's not a bad way to while away a few minutes, glass of wine in hand; and
for reasons I won't bore you with, I didn't get to vote on the round that ended at 6.00am on Monday.

Particularly liked M0rkeleb's "My Faith Lady" for Nun's Story.

Thought to answer this point, but wanted to preserve your last word, so relented.

You see a lot of movies. You miss a lot of obvious classics.

Wow! I'm actually a little surprised they'd do that. There is likely to be plenty of young people who have never heard the twist and would enjoy it more without the spoiler on the cover. I watched it for the first time only a few years ago and was glad I didn't know the twist.

I recall discussing POTA in this fourum a couple of years ago and being castigated by another fourumite for revealing the twist. Benj quickly stepped in and edited my post to remove the spoiler.

Having said that, if one hangs around movie-websites long enough then occasional 'spoilerisation' is inevitable. I think if I was aware of classics with major plot twists that I hadn't seen I'd go watch them as soon as I could to reduce the chance of reading a spoiler. At present I'm not aware of any.

I see a lot at the cinema - not many others. Also, I'm a lot younger than you - it would not be much fun in the future if I had already watched all classics!

I'm seriously starting to worry about running out of decent movies to watch.
