| I just saw a market research screening for a hilarious movie that isn't out in theaters yet. I haven't laughed this hard or this often in a movie since I saw Borat. I would love to give it some positive word of mouth support, but unfortunately, because the movie is still in post-production, they made me sign a contract forbidding me to talk about it on the Internet. I don't know when its going to come out in theaters, but it must be relatively soon because its in the "COMING SOON" section of the Sony Pictures movies website, but I won't say more than that. |

Well I did love Borat, but with you only being a 'casual buddy 57%' on the movie compatability test, I guess I'll have to hold back until i've seen the movie you're not allowed to talk about  |

| I have an idea which one it is. I put it into one of my Fantasy Moguls theaters, took it out, put it back, and I think I finally decided to drop it. I refused to see the Borat movie since I don't find Baron-Cohen funny at all, so... hm... |

I don't even know what Fantasy Moguls theaters are, but my guess is that if Borat isn't your cup of tea, you might not like my Mystery Movie either. Its not done in the same mockumentary style, but the humor is pretty much at the same level. Now I just have one question:
Why do lacked hexes try a wort?

isn't in the Mystery Move?
The trailer for that one looks insanely funny to me.
And Solomon Brothers looks so stupid and unfunny...and its website gives away the entire story anyhow. |

I'm resurrecting this post. To summarize, I wanted to covertly recommend a film I saw at a market research screening last August. I signed a contract saying that I was not allowed to discuss or review the film on the Internet before the film was released to the public. I tried to give a hint by providing an anagram of the title.
Now that its out, I feel great about recommending Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story which is much funnier than the advertising for it makes it out to be. John C. Reilly gives a really daring performance as a Walk the Line / Ray music biopic character. He is at the same time a sympathetic character and a Dumb & Dumber style clown. And he can sing! The songs in this film are actually not bad and I hope to buy the soundtrack if I can find it at an affordable price. The writing and acting is much more nuanced than a film like this usually gets credit for (and often deserves). I laughed harder and more often during this movie than in anything since Borat. Check it out! |

I've thought of your original post each time I've seen trailers for this film online. I laughed myself into tears over them. I think this is one of the great comedies. I am impressed by Reilly's singing voice also. As with Jack Black, it is a delight to hear such a fine voice emerge from an unprepossessing package. |

cool, you might want to retitle this thread, because I just saw WALK HARD on DVD and went looking for it in Films -- I almost buzzed right by this conversation.
I'm sorry to say that I wasn't as big a fan as you were. Comedy is the most subjective of movie genres: what works for me may be a yawner to you. Although I found plenty to laugh at, it just didn't give me that euphoric feeling I have during comedies I really love [e.g., the first AUSTIN POWERS]. Maybe when you see HAMLET 2 this summer, you will be similarly underimpressed, but I nearly wet my pants. Same deal.
The movie's crammed with guest stars, which is fun, many of 'em even uncredited: my favorite turn was Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Justin Long and Jason Schwartzman as the Maharishi-era Beatles. I thought it was an Apatow off-day in the writing, too: some of the lines were hilarious, but I found more others forced. Most crucially, the songs weren't as funny as they thought they were, not even my double-entendre favorite, "Let's Duet," though Jenna Fischer has never looked cuter. It's fun to see the red-hot Apatow troupe throw their weight around, such as going to the trouble of hiring the real Temptations just to serve as the punch line for a joke.
This endless parade of musical biopics is certainly right for parody, they richly deserve a few pies in the face, but I regret to say I was mildly disappointed in this one. Not that it was bad -- just eh? My capsule review, which Ms. Randall would appreciate, is: (1) Number of times I took my glasses off to wipe the tears from my eyes: 0; and (2) it's a comedy but I don't feel I need to see it again and again, not even once. |

I liked it, and will watch it again.
I think it is not quite pee-in-your-pants funny, but maybe that's because there have been so many great comedies recently that it's hard to top them.
Watched the extras on the DVD and laughed all over again. |

I just changed the title of the thread.
I haven't seen the movie on DVD, but I can imagine the praise in my original post would look excessive after seeing it for the first time on DVD, without an audience, and after knowing something about the film already. I was lucky enough to go in absolutely blind (the only thing I knew was that it starred John C. Reilly), with a full house of 20-40 year olds laughing with me all the way through, and on the big screen.
As for comedy being "the most subjective of movie genres," I can think of a genre even more subjective, but I'll leave it to the imagination as to which genre that is ...
