By the way, Anne Hathaway doesn't quite pull off a believable or consistant English accent in Becoming Jane.
(She obviously didn't have Ren�e Zellweger's accent coach.)

| Speaking of Renee Zelwegger, I am consistently amazed that she, a native Texan, nailed her British accent for Bridget Jones's Diary but in Cold Mountain had the worst Southern accent I've heard since, geez, Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling. |

I agree about her excellent London accent, but thought she also had a damn good accent in Cold Mountain. However I'm not American so obviously not as familiar with a 'real' accent. Any other US Southerners have a view on this? She got an Oscar for the role, so I can't see how it could have been that bad.
Also, Julianne Moore is from North Carolina, which was part of the Confederacy, so how could it be a 'bad' accent? Or was she trying to do a 'different' southern accent than her actual accent? Just a question, as I don't know.  |

Zellwegger did an ok accent - it was just over the top - some people speak that way but not many an dif you heard that in real life you'd raise your eyebrows.
I submit Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins - sounded a bit like the learn a cockney accent by audio tape for me. |

In Renee's defence, the character she played in Cold Mountain wasn't a high society woman before the war, and would therefore have a heavier, rougher accent than Kidman had, and I think she was very realistic in the part. On the other hand, I think Kidman's accent was inconsistent in that movie, and thank goodness Jude Law didn't have long monologues, as he also couldn't keep the accent even.

Look, you can't submit that - on any stodgy accent thread there is one given which needs not be mentioned. That is: "the absolute worst accent ever in any movie, past, present or future was Dick Van Dyke's portrayal of Bert in the movie Mary Poppins".
Give us something we don't already know as a irrefutable truth.

Brad Pitt in Snatch. Although the mumbling became a discussion point for the character - I'm sure it was to disguise his bad Irish accent.
What is the opinion in the US of Hugh Laurie's accent in House M.D.? Not films, I know, but I've always wondered if it is seen as authentic. |

I've watched this faithfully and can say that in my opinion, he almost never slips and I find myself having to remind myself that he isn't American.
By the way, in the new(ish) TV series "Dirt", Ian Hart plays a nutty photographer, and is the male star of the show opposite Courtney Cox. I didn't recognize him and was totally shocked to see that he's British when I looked him up on IMDb - his American accent was totally convincing.

In defence of the Pitt you obviously have not met a member of the Irish travelling community in the UK (or in Ireland for that matter) his accent is so spot on it's uncanny.
To hear a bad Irish accent (of which their have been many) you need to endure Tommy Lee Jones in Blown Away...it's like nails scraping on a blackboard. |

Virtually flawless. Good enough that most Americans probably think he putting on a fake English accent when he's heard in his normal voice. (e.g, on Saturday Night Live).
Also completely covering their accents convincingly: Anthony LaPaglia and Poppy Montgomery (both Aussies) on Without A Trace. |

Russell Crowe does an odd, plummy thing with his voice in Master and Commander. And don't forget Christophe Lambert in Highlander

I think Kevin Costner won the Bad Accent Award in '91 not just for fucking up his British accent in the mind-blowingly bad Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but also his Boston accent in JFK.
In 1993, Cary Elwes ragged on Costner's awful British accent in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, which is funny on two levels, because in that same year's The Crush, Elwes demonstrated that he had a terrible American accent.
Worst Irish accent I've ever heard: Julia Roberts in Michael Collins. Keep that woman away from foreign countries.

Allegedly, Brad Pitt was originally supposed to be playing a Cockney, but couldn't get the accent. So he did "Pikey" instead. |
