| How about EVERYBODY in The Departed? Those accents were absolutely dreadful, and completely unnecessary, too, because what most people call a "Boston accent" is really just a Southie accent. I can't even decide who had the worst accent of all in that film...it was probably Martin Sheen, but it could have been Vera Farmiga. It wasn't Damon, although his was pretty bad, too...kinda sad, considering he's the one member of the cast that actually grew up with that accent. |

He's supposed to be from Boston in that? Then he really did miss the mark, didn't he? I thought he was supposed to be from New Orleans, and I thought he'd failed at that...
And yeah, Julia Roberts did a bad Irish accent twice...Mary Reilly and Michael Collins.
Glenn Close dubbed Andie MacDowell in GREYSTOKE, so I'm sure Andie MacDowell loved the Glenn Close joke in 4 WEDDINGS and a FUNERAL

Whoops! Yes, the accent he fucked up in JFK is a N'Awlins accent. He fucked up his Boston accent in Thirteen Days. My bad! |

Oh, yes, 13 Days...the one where Kevin Costner almost singlehandedly defuses the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Another odd sounding Boston lawyer accent: the guy from Numbers that was in Quiz Show: he's supposed to be from Brookline, Mass. Is it authentic? Can someone tell me? I found it distracting... |

Steven Hill, Peter Graves, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain's, all-purpose "vaguely Eastern European or Latin American" accents in the original MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE TV series. Despite this fact -- we laughed about it back when they were on the air -- they're coming out on DVD and they are wonderful! Accents? M:I fans don't need no steenking accents! |

Whenever you see thespians essaying a Southern accent, think of me [having spent half my life in the Deep South], for my reaction is always identical to yours. Dialect coaches always default to some weird nonexistent fantasy, and only someone who's actually been there [e.g., Holly Hunter] can even approach the correct twang. |

Here's a stinger, which I didn't know myself, but an older person told me about.
Meryl Streep gained huge credit for her Polish accent in Sophie's Choice, but in truth, to people from Poland, they say her accent was way off - far closer to Romanian than Polish, but with a touch of Hungarian - meaning she must have learned her "Polish accent" from someone from the area of Transylvania!

Are you suggesting Streep that may be a vampire?

What is the opinion in the US of Hugh Laurie's accent in House M.D.? Not films, I know, but I've always wondered if it is seen as authentic.
Virtually flawless. Good enough that most Americans probably think he putting on a fake English accent when he's heard in his normal voice. (e.g, on Saturday Night Live).
Also completely covering their accents convincingly: Anthony LaPaglia and Poppy Montgomery (both Aussies) on Without A Trace.
I read that Poppy Montgomery was australian but i thought Anthony La Paglia was the real deal but he's from Adelaide! Nice Job.
Mind you his attempt at an english accent in Frasier wasn't quite as good! |

La Paglia was interviewed about that. Daphne is from Manchester; he was playing her obnoxious brother; he couldn't be bothered to try a Manchester accent because he thought "what the hell, Yanks won't know the difference", so he did some standard-issue Cockney yob instead....and subsequesntly was in England where he got tons of abuse from Mancunians

I've heard that Branagh's backwoods Georgia accent was nearly flawless. |

He deserved it! He wouldnt be too pleased if someone played australian with a new zealand accent!
The British accents in "Spinal Tap" were incredibly good
Jamie Bamber ( Apollo ) does a reasonable american in Galactica.
Which sort of begs the question in series like Galactica , House , Ugly Betty - how come Australians and english actors get lead roles - doesnt equity cause a fuss?
BTW Heroes - some good accents here when you see them as they really are - " Mohinder " very american , "Isaac" sounds english and " Hiro" and "Ando" are also very american. I wonder if the japanese think their japanese is ok! |
