wildhartlivie - I do laugh at the witty hints, sure. But, even then, they end up defeating the purpose of the reviews.

But serially, folks....

Ralph Nadir sez hints are unsafe at any speed.

EDIT: I didn't need a hint to V&V.

More Newish: Use the morse Luke, boot quaking, Costner's hat trick, Robbie's foul language, old guys

Very slight spoiler for Bucket List, but lets face it, its what the movie is about - kind of like saying there may be some fighting in Saving Private Ryan (sorry if I ruined that for you).

All Kieslowski.

Spoiler for Blind Chance.

This is just to say....

Tomek longingly spies on Madga with a telescope.
Binoche finds peace through scoring her husband's musical piece.
Red is the final film of the Three Colors trilogy.

The Drop Dead Gprgeous review is a personal favorite, because it represents something I've been trying to do for a while.

As yesterday was my last day in the office, I did not have the time to vote that I expected. I've therefore visited all of the links in the previous thread, but will also visit all of these in case explanations make a difference. (N.B. I never know why people call this sort of thing lurker voting - if one posts a message, then one isn't lurking!)

Even as a big defender of explanations, I have to agree. I think it is fine to give information about films or the world in general that one would not expect the average person here to know, but the bare minimum should be indicated. Recently there was one which topped the infamous "A group of lions is called a pride"! Very often, an explanation includes something quite obvious, but which fits nicely with the film in question; I look forward to a nice review but then find that there's no more to see, so a review I might otherwise have voted for then doesn't appeal.

Another type of pointless explanation is for reviews of the type "Stallone dances". It does not matter if people don't know that Stallone dances in the film - it is obvious from the review and doesn't need mentioning separately.

All that said, my explanation in the last round was something quite obvious too - I was just disappointed with the number of votes compared to some of my weaker reviews alongside.

Only newbies don't know [or perhaps even care] what I think about explanations, which is: they're fine for anyone who wants to use 'em and I have no problem with them. Live and let live. Some of them, like the ones cited, might be an insult to the intelligence, but I'm never insulted because...

...I don't use them, because I think my reviews have to exist on the site without explanation, so they ought to start practicing, and...

...I never read them when provided by others.

I'm sure I've lost potential votes over this policy [betcha even some this round!], but that's just how I roll.

May I suggest that those people who regularly write hints consider before they post them whether, if the hint were made to someone in person, that person would slap them around the face with a wet kipper, were they to have the opportunity.

If they would slap you around the face with said wet kipper then may I suggest you reconsider posting that particular hint?

Just a thought.

Thanks for your attention.

I post hints for films that I think are fairly obscure. I've not met a great number of people who have seen all or even more than a few of Kieslowski's films, for example.

I do read the hints that others provide. This is because I have not watched, and probably never will watch, many of the films that others review on this site. Someone may come up with a brilliant review for a film I know nothing about, like Sal's "Butter, knife" entry in the last round, and if a hint will help me see that then I welcome it.

That said, I agree with Randall. If you find hints unnecessary or offensive, then simply skip over them.
