Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to be as bad as Fantastic Four, but I was at least expecting it to be better than Fantastic Four 2! One could argue that the plot and acting were better, but the action and effects weren't, at least in my opinion.

This sentence implies that one could also argue the reverse, which is emphatically not true. Fantastic Four 2 is horrific. And the action setpieces were okay at best, for the record.

Iron Man is closer in spirit to Batman Begins than to the Spider-Man or X-Men movies; it does not bother me in the slightest that it's not an action-packed thrill ride. It's funny, it's interesting, and it's fun; makes a nice antidote to something noxious like Transformers.

While I did not care much for Fantastic Four 2 as a whole, I can't think of anything in Iron Man that was cooler than the Johnny Storm vs. Silver Surfer chase toward the beginning of the movie (right after the wedding).

There are a few films in the world where if you don't like them, you''re wrong. Iron Man is the latest addition to this illustrious club.

ok, i'm back, as if you cared.
i thought easily the best thing about IM was casting Downey as Stark. he was perfect as a rich, hard-partying abuser, umm, because that's what he is, or was, and still has a reputation for being. so perhaps his acting skills weren't really tested but it was perfect.
my favorite part was when Pepper walks in on him in the armor and he says something like, "This isn't the worst thing you've caught me doing." to me, that was the actor talking as much as the character. it was like Downey said, "yeah, i'm doing a super-hero movie, but remember when i was in rehab?"
i also like Jeff Bridges, who i didn't even know was in the movie 'til i glanced at the poster on the way in the theater. to me and a bunch of other movie fans, he'll always be The Dude, and Stane was miles away from that. Terrence Howard is one of my favorites but i don't think that role suited him.
i was underwhelmed with the appearance of the first armor. i know it was supposed to be crude and ugly but i still wanted to be wowed when i saw it. but during the sequence with the planes the wow factor was off the charts.
i thought the big fight should have gone longer, and it made no sense that Stane could operate the armor like a pro the first time he jumped in it.
still IM is one of the best superhero movies ever, about even with "Batman Begins."

This reminds me of the quite rightly named Facebook group If you don't like Peep Show, you're probably not worth knowing.

I guess time will tell. I am not a father, but I hope to have children some day. I look forward to the day when one of my children is channel surfing, finds Iron Man on cable tv late at night, watches it for about a minute and a half, and then changes the channel.

I don't think he gave them much choice in the matter! Anyway, yes, he is perfect for it - as well as perfect in general, but that's another story...

Not that you would mind them being their own people and having their own preferences or anything!

I want to say that as much as I liked this movie, I very much do not believe that it is unassailable. In fact, there's a lot that bothers me about this movie, especially considering how much I liked this movie. I mean, take a look at these elements:

*Vaguely racist depictions of terrorists, watered-down so that they have no religion, political motivation or even a common race or region
*A wish-fulfillment character arc that sees a hot, rich, charming playboy genius become a hot, rich, charming, righteous and ass-kicking playboy genius
*Political fence-straddling and a possibly contradictory message about military technology

I'm not saying I agree with these criticisms, I've actually thought hard to come up with responses to them, but my point is that I can see where people would dislike this film, even though everyone in the world has liked it so far. I eagerly await BaftaBabe's take on this one.

Not at all. What I was getting at was that I expect that by 2028 or so, if Iron Man is written about in the history books at all, it will be as being among the successful surge in popularity of superheros during the 2000s around the time of (and perhaps as a response to) the War on Terror just as superheroes rose in popularity during World War II and the Cold War. Individually, each of these comic book films are unimportant to film history. In that sense, they are like each individual 1950s flying saucer B-movie or each individual 1980s "hard body" movies (such as Rambo). Rather, they belong to a greater picture of what American culture was like during the decade they were produced.
