I think they went the right way with just showing a teaser, and having absolutely no allusions whatsoever to the overall plot. I doubt many people would make the connection between Jon Osterman's disintegration and Captain Manhattan.
I, too, disliked 300 instensely, but I know people who are working on this thing (and they vouch for Snyder's vision), I have read the shooting draft, and I have now seen the trailer. It looks prettay, prettay, prettay good.
And they're calling him Captain Manhattan? First miscue. |

Hah! You got me. Dr. Mannequin, of course.
My aversion to smileys pays its dividends once again.
Email me if you want the script, by the way. I assume everyone who cares about these things has a copy of Inglorious Basterds (sic), but I can send that over, too, if you like.

Now, me, personally, I seriously love Zack Synder 300, and I also seriously love his previous project, the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Both just great, great movies, and I've been arguing for about a year now that, based on the evidence of those other movies, Snyder is exactly the WRONG choice for Watchmen. Like I said, I love both those movies, but for their bluntness more than anything. The guy doesn't fuck around. Watchmen is a far more nuanced and complicated thing than he's made before, and I'm not convinced he has the chops for it.
Also, the book was made and set in 1985. The movie is made in 2008 and set in 1985, which is an entirely different proposition. So much of the movie revolves around Cold War politics that to change the setting would be inarguably to change the movie, but at the same time, making it as a period piece makes me worry it will lose some of its relevance. |

Not sure. The eventuality and the reason for it, and its results, echo in our post-9/11 world. Case in point: The script to the version that was being developed by Paul Greengrass, when he was set to direct the film a few years ago, was contemporary, and opened with a shot of the twin towers, still standing.

??? Don't get what was funny or even why you averted a smiley.

Thanks, but nope. I'll wait for the flick. I have a pretty good set of storyboards right here at home. |

Saw the trailer before TDK, looks intriguing. Not sure what I was looking at, but it was interesting for sure.
Maybe I should read up on this before the movie release? |

Absolutely! The graphic novel is well worth reading on its own. The only comic ever to win a Hugo award, selected by EW as among the top 30 books of the past 25 years, and by Time as among the top 100 of the 20th century. It is a masterpiece that you get something new on each reading. To get some idea, google the phrase "annotated Watchmen". |

Not to mention that this has to be the first trailer to inspire an Entertainment Weekly cover! |

Hmmm, I loved the book but am also slightly dubious about Snyder directing. 300 suited him because that graphic novel plays heavy on the graphic side whilst the dialogue is pretty incidental. It's a totally different story for Watchmen which is more dialogue and plot heavy (than any graphic novel ever??) whilst the graphics, while passable, play second fiddle.
I dunno, it doesn't look gritty enough for my liking. There's too many dramatic physical shots in slow-mo throughout the trailer, while the Vietnam scenes look like an ad for a new men's fragrance (CAMOUFLAGE - FOR MEN WHO LIKE TO NAPALM THEIR DATE). I'm a little worried. |

Well, if it's any kind of a good indication, when I spoke with Dave Gibbons about the film last month he was had nothing but the highest praise for the recreation of the graphic novel, both in terms of the sets he'd been on and the footage he'd seen.
Then again, he's probably getting a cut of the profits |

Gibbons most definitely is getting a cut. Alan Moore has refused to take any money from the film and has demanded that any royalties go to Gibbons. (If you've ever seen an Alan Moore script, you'll know every penny is earned. He can write 3 pages describing what a single panel on a 3x3 page looks like.)
He's also written his own take on the creation of Watchmen - "Watching The Watchmen" coming out in October. |

What Bigger Boat said.
My other reservation is purely bitter jealousy because of my acquaintance with a member of the principal cast. |
