Its 2 months early, but I have a free Saturday, so what the hell, right? List your favorite movies of the decade.
1. Requiem for a Dream ("Connelly makes ends meet.") - Among the most frightening and effective films I've ever seen. Ellen Burstyn gives one of the great performances in the history of cinema as a drug addicted, game show fan who quickly loses her mind. 2. Slumdog Millionaire ("Mumbai orphan given lifeline.") - Danny Boyle is one of the greatest living directors and this is his masterpiece. The screenplay by Simon Beaufoy manages to be bold melodrama and acute social critique at once, and its non-linear structure always manages to both clarify and intensify the action. 3. About Schmidt ("Unthinkable 'Molly Brown' scene.") - Jack Nicholson gives one of his most quiet, nuanced performances as a man who realized that he has wasted most of his life. The script by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor is a fine balance between tragedy and comedy. 4. Chicken Run ("Aussie Can Cluck.") - The animation is first rate and so is the screenplay. Watch it again. The characters in this film are more "human" than in most films. 5. Juno ("Diablo's best 'adopted' screenplay.") - Juno an exaggeration, but not a cartoon character. Watch Ellen Page's performance again and notice how multi-layered the writing and acting is. 6. WALL E ("Meet WALL-E's sparks.") - The film relies more on "acting" than on dialogue and still manages to have a lot to say about the human condition. The animation is groundbreaking and superb. 7. Man on Wire ("I am ledge end.") - One of the most inspiring films I've ever seen. This documentary plays like a suspense thriller. 8. Monster ("She scores... she shoots!") - Charlize Theron gives a performance equal to Ellen Burstyn's in Requiem for a Dream. The film also has an intelligent, subtle, and even empathetic screenplay that sees humanity in this story of a serial killer while condemning the crimes. 9. United 93 ("Sheikhs on a Plane.") - Captures the feelings and events of that terrible day better than any other work of art I've ever seen. 10. Inglourious Bastards - The performances, directing, screenplay, cinematography, and editing are all first rate. Quentin Tarantino's best film, in my opinion.
Movies from the 2000s I haven't seen which might have made the list: Capitalism, Changeling, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, A Serious Man, and The Wrestler. |

I have 20-22 movies from this decade that I've given 10/10. I was a little perturbed at the lack of 10's since 2006, so I went hunting for 9's (which would get me up to 55 movies), but there are none of those beyond 2006 either! However if I dropped the score to 8 then I'd end up with 212 movies with plenty beyond 2006, but that's a lot more than would be useful here.
I put down the discrepancy to having watched the IMDb Top 250 in 2007 so have likely become more critical since then. C'est la vie...
Anyway I hand picked a few 8/10's since 2007 to fill in the gap a little. The lack of movies from 2009 is likely because I watch DVDs so haven't seen too many yet. Right, here they are in chronological order:-
10/10 Memento (2000) Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001) LOTR Trilogy (Extended Cut) (2001-2003) Cidade de Deus (2002) The Pianist (2002) Janghwa, Hongryeon (2003) Lost in Translation (2003) Conseguenze dell'amore, Le (2004) Der Untergang (2004) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Machuca (2004) The Incredibles (2004) Marche de l'empereur, La (2005) Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) Water (2005) Das Leben der Anderen (2006) Den Brysomme mannen (2006) *Lt den rtte komma in (2008)
8/10 Atonement (2007) Die Flscher (2007) Ratatouille (2007) Doubt (2008) In Bruges (2008) Slumdog Millionaire (2008) WALLE (2008)
*Edit: I've no idea how/why this one didn't show up on my list, but it's there now. |

a nonfwiffer friend of mine started a discussion like this on facebook, about not necessarily the best movies, but those that may have defined the decade. my take went something like this: the most entertaining films of the decade for me were: "Oldboy" and "Let the Right One In." funny that neither of those came out of Hollywood, but it'll be taking a shot at both. the blockbusters: "The Dark Knight," and the LOTR trilogy. movies that made us uncomfortable: "Milk," "Brokeback Mountain," and "Hotel Rwanda." the 2k drug trilogy: "Blow," "Traffic," and "Requiem for a Dream." and however one may feel about the film or the main character, "W." he pretty much set the world's agenda for the decade.

Nice time to be thinking about this. I'm tempted to do another thread on this offshoot, but this is a good place to ask for this too: I'd like to know especially if anyone has a small handful of films that specifically are not on a lot of top commercial success or even (year end) critics lists.
I found myself drawn in by these: Lakposhtha Parvaz Mikonand (Turtles Can Fly) (2004) Maria Full of Grace (2004) Harsh Times (2005) Fidel (2002 - TV)
Documentaries including two on Burma: Burma VJ (2008) Total Denial (2006) The Corporation (2003)
Turtles Can Fly is a must see film with exceptional performances by not one, but several Kurdish children.
Synopsis from filmmaker Bahman Ghobaldi's website: The film is set in a Kurdish refugee camp on the Iraqi-Turkish border on the eve of the US invasion of Iraq. Thirteen-year-old Kak Satellite is known as "Satellite" for his installation of satellite dishes and antennas for local villagers looking for news of Saddam Hussein and the impending war. He is the dynamic leader of the children, organizing the dangerous but necessary sweeping and clearing of the minefields, and then arranges trade-ins for the unexploded mines.
Satellite falls for an unlikely orphan named Agrin, a sad-faced girl traveling with her disabled but smart brother Henkov, who appears to have the gift of clairvoyance. The siblings are taking care of a three-year-old, whose connection to the pair is discovered as harsh truths about these children are revealed.

Based on your post, I've added this to my Netflix queue. I have never heard of this film but it sounds very interesting, thanks! |

The one that made me think most, "These guys know exactly what they'e doing here," is
THE RETURN OF THE KING
There are many more that knocked me back during the decade, but this one did it swimming upstream against my natural Hollywood prejudice. What a beautiful job. I can't wait for THE LOVELY BONES. |

Typically most of this list, particularly its ordering, is rubbish but it does give an idea of some of the key films of the decade. I think my personal shortlist is going to take a bit longer to cogitate. |

That list isn't too bad. OK, a few duds, and I agree the ordering is crap. Still, there were 20 movies on it I haven't seen, and I've just netflixed 15 of them. |

Oof, that top 100 list is just crap. Outright crap. Team America in the top fucking ten? Wedding Crashers??? I mean, Cache at number one; I accept that I'm the only who gets Michael Haneke but doesn't like Cache, but at least I can somewhat see the justification. I can even see somewhat a justification for the inclusion of the beyond-overrated The Queen and Slumdog Millionaire in the top ten. But Team Fucking America? What might have seemed daring in 2004 has been revealed with the passing of time and the full legacy of the Bush administration as pure, undistilled ballslessness. |

I think it's generally agreed that the order in that list is meaningless. It's quite reasonable to put Team America in the Top 100 of the decade, it's funnier than any other movie from the noughties. Slumdog Millionairre and Cach are also definitely among the best 100.
