This nice little animated gem has a little more on its plate than it actually delivers. But the inventiveness of transferring a high-tech world to avatars of cloth and string is soothing and seductive, and the filmmakers wring everything possible out of their metaphorical shift. We're in yet another post-apocalyptic ruin, not nearly as cheerful as WALL-E's. But this time the life-force is invested in little moving rag dolls, meant to imply the midpoint between the essences of humans and machines.

This picture also has the temerity to cut it off after the story's told: it runs about 1:16, and that's fine. A good rental that has lots of unexpected merits on the upside.

MINOR SPOILERS

This movie had a colossal disappointment of an ending -- I suspect that everything was quite rushed so that it could meet its 9/9/09 release date. The details have all gone fuzzy to me, but it seemed like what the little dolls did to win the fight was not the right thing to do.

I'm also reminded of Walter Chaw of Film Freak Central's comment that in the end the little dolls have won nothing but rule over the wasteland -- it's a movie about people basically fighting over scraps. And it didn't have to be that, but seriously -- what the fuck was up with that ending?

!!!MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

I really enjoyed this film. Yes, it is another post-apocalyptic wasteland (I notice that no one seems to be hassling The Road for going down this path) and yes, there are nods to other fantasy/adventure films, but it was done with a lightness of touch that I found quite refreshing.

Good pace, nice overtones and references, well-developed characters and a lovely mystery to unfold. I thought the ending was okay. I don't know if you remember this MBI, but the rain that falls at the end has mitochondria (or something) in the drops meaning that life will get another chance. The puppets saved the world, goddammit!

I'd certainly recommend, but not for kids.
