| This blogs-to-riches tale wasn't as much fun as we'd hoped. Though I am in love with Amy Adams, her character wasn't cuddly in the slightest. Meryl Streep, yeah, blah blah, but she's only doing Dan Aykroyd's Julia Child impression from 70s SNL. Both self-centered women "muddle through" unrequited support from long-suffering husbands. Not that such relationships aren't fun to watch, but it doesn't make either dame a hero either. And unlike a real foodie flick like [Stanley Tucci's own] BIG NIGHT, there's not enough food prep and eating to scratch even that itch. Rent it, even if you're hungry, but that's as far as you should go. |

I'm going to agree here from the food perspective. However, it got me to check out Julie's original blog and the film accurately reflects her language. Both blog and film impart more the philosophy of Julia in bringing French cooking to the masses, than the actual art of cooking. It's nice that Julie's writing voice translated so well to film they just about took it word for word. I haven't advanced too far into the blog yet, but I guess I can say that the Julie side of the story pretty well matches the actual blog. Tragically, the text there survives but the pic links (so far as I've read) are lost. Perhaps they're in the Wayback Machine.
I think Meryl Streep actually brought a lot of life to the character. But funny to see her portraying a giant.
While the story arc (if there is an arc) is less than satisfying, I enjoyed it for the real Julie's attitude, and the life story of Julia Child which was previously unknown to me. |

I got a kick out of the conversations where she had to defend her blog to family, friends, and co-workers, who all acted like it was a phase that she would soon grow out of.

I probably enjoyed it more because as a young girl, I remember my big sister sitting in our bedroom and faithfully watching each and every episode of Julia Child's show on public television (channel 11 in Chicago), while taking copious notes, even during the re-runs. She still has her dog-eared copy of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". Moreover, I remember when she attempted to make beef bourguignon. The condition of our kitchen made a war-zone look tidy!
Streep was a bit over the top, but then, so was Julia! |
