At sunset, HBO bused about 400 guests across the Ford Island causeway in Pearl Harbor to a screening of the first episode of The Pacific. The reception was held dockside of the Mighty Mo. The three principal actors were present as well as WWII vets who fought in the Pacific theater. Entertainment was provided by The Marine Corps Band which played tunes that my Grandfather would have recognized. The screening itself was held on the deck of the USS Missouri itself. The episode starts slowly, introducing the characters Stateside. Action picks up with the landing of the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal. It was so realistic that I thought I could smell the salt spray. Of course we were on the deck of the Mighty Mo. The jungle scenes were gnarly, sort of like Lost with more than one samurai. The climactic battle was, well, climactic. Some cliches like:
Spoiler: humanizing the enemy by having the Marines go though the belonging of the dead Japanes and finding familiy photos and a child's doll.
Clips from upcoming episodes were also shown. This has the look and feel of a $100 million dollar production. It will be a success. I did score a Pacific cap. |
