Sorry for starting a new thread -- I couldn't find the old one(s).
With the book and the book website kicking around, I was just wondering whether this site is still going to be visually redesigned. (Is it waiting for the technical redesign to be done?) Will it be black and white? I just suddenly thought about accolade trophies -- a lot of them incorporate one or both of the greens and are going to look rather bizarre.
I think we should definitely aim to amend all of those when it comes to it, including those of inactive members. I don't mind doing some if given instructions on how to do so in Paint, the only applicable application I have. |

The visual redesign is a large part of the complete rewrite since the new way the code works influences the design and vice versa. However, the new site is absolutely not going to be black and white- I just don't think it fits with the (hopefully) fun of the site. I'm trying to come up with something that will not require trophies to be redone (thanks for the offer all the same). You'll see some crossover between the book and the new site but not that much. |

How could it be better? Add bacon. (Someone had to say it.)
benj, you've probably already thought of this, but are there any plans to integrate fwiffering with facebook, as in an application? |

Benj, with all due respect, the khaki green is a little... well... dull, in my opinion. The site is lively, we need a colour that reflects that.
(And no, I'm not suggesting chocolate brown or some hideous girlie shade of pink.)

Certainly thought about it, but like the iPhone app and the review submission via Twitter ideas this is on the backburner until I get the new site to a good place.
What did you have in mind for the Facebook integration BTW? Were you thinking a little app you can add to your page for random fwfrs or something else?

Hmm... well, I'm trying to bring the site bang up to date but also hark back to the current one somewhat (translation: I'm hoping to reuse some/ most of the same colours and images). I'd say just wait and see- I've no doubt pretty much everyone is going to hate something if not all I've done but at least give it a try (when I get around to putting it live) before suggesting what needs changing |

benj, were you surprised at the early book release? Could you have been planning to debut the new fwfr about three weeks from now? |

I remember when I came here telling Benj that this was the best beige thing I'd ever seen. (Does anyone else find that the colours look different on different computers? They used to usually look beige to me but now they usually look olive greens and similar.) I also don't like the colour blue; however, I'm very attached to those colours being the ones used here and would rather they stayed. That said, since the redesign was first announced, I have braced myself for the change and can live with whatever visual design Benj prefers.
Perhaps one could customise the site from a list of 'skins'? Then people could choose between shocking pink/turquoise and keeping the colours exactly as they are. (This would be a problem for accolade trophies, though.) |

Yeah, I was aiming for the book's official launch date but then this is just the latest in a long line of deadlines I've made myself over the last nearly two years.
The book launch was always going to be a long shot as this isn't going to be a quick thing- I can't simply switch over like I might have in the past. I think it's going to be a very big change for everyone, will need fine tuning and bug fixing, won't work with some peoples' browsers and a whole load of other boring reasons to do with search engine ranking.
I think the best we can hope for is some kind of parallel launch via a Try The New Beta Site link on the current homepage... perhaps in the next month |

I'm currently playing around with having variable background images/ colours whilst the central content styling stays the same so this isn't completely unfeasible. It also wouldn't mess with the accolades as they'd all be sat on the standard central content colour.
This is all stuff that we can revisit after we've all started playing around with the basic site however. |

Please can you announce very clearly in the Fourum in advance of the exact time you're going to do it? I know it's rather paranoid, but I'd like to copy and paste all my reviews into Excel just in case something goes horribly wrong, and I'd like the chance to say goodbye to the current version of the site. Thanks! |

Much as I appreciate your confidence in my coding skills... I'm going to be running the two sites in parallel, using separate databases. The new site will be just for test purposes initially. |

It's just after when the site was hacked or whatever it was. One never knows what might happen. |

Hmm... on that rational, given that this site could be hacked at any time, wouldn't it be prudent to keep a copy of all your reviews full stop? |

I do have a copy from a couple of months ago, but it's not practical to update it continually. This seems like a good time to do so though. |
