Wildhart, as you know, you're beloved Ball State is what is termed a midmajor and Muncie ain't exactly a magnet for the elite hoops talent. They'll get the some quality guys though and always be competititve. A few years back, the orotund Coach Rick Majerus advanced them deep into the NCAA tournament with a star player named Paris McGurdy. Do you recall that nanosecond of glory? Also, ever spend any liquid-fueled, philosophical time in The Chug?

OMG, there IS someone in the world who knows about it. Yes, I vividly recall the sell-out-to-UNLV-for-bigger-bucks-Rick-Majerus-because-Ball-State-was-his-stepping-stone-to-bigger-things. (eww, does that sound bitter??) And McCurdy was balanced by Curtis Kidd. It was basically the nanosecond of glory I was referring to. BSU didn't go into the NCAAs as a seeded team (#12) until the next year, after Majerus' departure, under Dick Hunsaker. I have to say, though, that two of the key players during those years *were* not only Hoosier natives, but products of the Muncie school system - Billy Butts and Chandler Thompson. In the playoffs, BSU upset No. 4 seed Oregon State in Salt Lake City. They managed to shut down Gary Payton, who was NCAA Player of the Year. The next game, they won again, this time over #4 seed Louisville, to advance to the sweet 16. The real heartbreaker was their near victory over, you guessed it, UNLV, in the first game of the next round. UNLV, the eventual champions, ousted them 69-67, the closest ANY team in the tournament came.
I was actually attending Ball State at that time, but I was a bit older than the actual BSU student. I worked full time as a cook and then coordinator at a large local smorgasbord and was thus resigned to watching the thrill of victory and agony of defeat on a tv sitting high on a shelf in our kitchen. I was always busy, so no, I didn't have opportunity to down mugs at the Chug. But I've had my fair share of Greek's Pizza and I used to do my between classes reading at The Flying Tomato.
Ball U has two or three very high profile graduates. Jim Davis, of Garfield fame, is an alumni, as is David Letterman, who established a scholarship for Telecommunications students carrying a C+ average.

Alumni from my alma mater NYU make up some of the best actors and filmakers on this website. Plus (since we're talking about sports) we have the distinction of being one of "the other schools" involved in the 1951 City College point shaving scandal, which is supposedly the catalyst which led to us dropping down to Division III. |

The New Orleans Saints held their training camp this past summer at my alma mater, Millsaps College, and made it all the way to the conference championship game! Coincidence? You make the call! [P.S.: They've already signed up to train at Millsaps a few times more.] |

Reading my posts in this thread would actually lead one to believe that I was into sports, wouldn't it? It ain't necessarily so. I loved the Bulls when we all liked Mike, and I won a TON of money from my boss back in the 80s when Joe Montana could do no wrong. I always bet the Niners, and took the line. I remember one Superbowl betting my entire Christmas bonus, which was substantial for a single girl working her way through college. Joe Montana and my boss paid my 3rd quarter tuition. Nowadays I just play the NCAA pools and might watch the Superbowl. Isn't that coming up soon?? |

Wildhart, your sports knowledge is very impressive, but Majerus did not sell out for UNLV (university of no library visits?). We went on to coach at Utah. He is now an ESPN analyst, and he's equal parts boring and pedantic, not averse to using absurdly inappropriate words such as "lugubrious," "inchoate," and "invidious" that would no doubt send joe sixpack to the dictionary.
BTW, I'm a resident of Illinois, and our state actually has a greater hoops tradition than Indiana. There are only a few blowhards like I who would call attention to that fact.

Please, Randall, let's not stick that Howard moniker on anyone.
Rovark, I'm talking sports banter in the hopes that the MERPs will absorb it like secondhand smoke and become more receptive to my "inside" reviews of American sports movies. Don't worry, I'm not poised to segue into a discussion about how the Bears' secondary will hold up vs. Peyton Manning or whether the Colts front seven will contain the vaunted Chicago rushing attack.

We?? Gods, are you a Majerus?!?! I do know he went on to Utah, and mercifully fell off MY radar anyway. I'm not claiming Indiana has the greatest bassaball tradition of all, but I'm willing to bet it's better known. And Rovark? Hoosiers. That's film related... But you didn't say how you knew about the Chug, Catuli.

I can only hope the Colts don't choke again. I spoke nary a word about betting on them over the years. |

Yes, Wildhart, I do know about the Chug, though sadly not by direct experience. Two very good friends of mine went to Ball U and spoke of it glowingly. However, I my knowledge of bars in Chicago probably transcends that of the IRS. If you ever happen to be in Glenview, Illinois, let's repair to The Yardhouse, drink a few for inspiration, and come up with some review ideas.
Clearly, Indiana has a great hoops tradition, I only countered with Illinois out of regional pride, although the state of Illinois did coin the term "March Madness." Even though I'm a Chicagoan, I'm a Chiefs fan, so I'm with you in hoping the Colts prevail. I'd like to see Peyton win a ring and validate his greatness.

Amen. I want it for him too, but not enough to wager on. There used to be a really great "titty bar" on McGalliard (Northwest Plaza) years ago that had Wednesday night stand-up comedy. That's where we first saw Ellen DeGeneres, the winter after she won the Funniest Person in America contest. I wish I could remember it's name. Oh, and if I ever make it across the state line, I'll hold you to it. |

It wasn't " Big Bob's Booby Trap " was it? Or was that in Bloom County . I get so confused these days! |

BTW a news story about a UK pensioner came to my attention and might cause different reactions on each side of the Atlantic.
" Mrs Smith , 63 , bravely beat off a man who had broken into her house"
Mind you , for years the Prime Minister has been "beating off" the opposition without so much as a smirk from the UK reading public.
