Over in THE ILLUSIONIST thread, Monty mentioned DEATH TO SMOOCHY. I don't care how many lousy reviews it got, I loved it!

At the risk of ruining any reputation as a discerning cineaste, I'll list a couple other recent Guilty Pleasures, and I invite you to do the same.

IDIOCRACY
Mike Judge's [OFFICE SPACE] new film. The studio evidently sat on it and only gave it a token theatrical. It's out on DVD now. It's many years in the future, everybody's gotten incredibly stupid because dumb-people reproduction is more prolific, so time traveler Luke Wilson is the smartest guy on Earth!

SEED OF CHUCKY
God help me, I thought it was hilarious. Hats off to Chucky's creator Don Mancini for deciding that "horror/comedy" would be more enjoyable if the two genres were reversed in importance. Plus, the real Jennifer Tilly gets to act with her malevolent-doll counterpart [who turns out to be a big fan!]. WARNING: This is the most perverse use of puppets since AVENUE Q.

I like watching romantic comedies.

In my defense, I also like the new Dr. Who series! Just saw the first one with David Tennant as The Doctor, last night.

I'm not sure how guilty I feel about it, but one of my favorite films is What Dreams May Come. A lot of critics and audiences panned this film, it didn't do well at the box office, and I have philosophical problems with the way it deals with how the God judges people who commit suicide. To be sure, it is not a perfect film, but then again, how many films are?

Romantic comedies are great, don't hide. I've already confessed to being a Bette Davis fan, so that's one huge guilty pleasure. Also, I own The Princess Bride on VHS and DVD.

But what's worse: I watched Kevin Smith's Dogma every time it comes on, and own the DVD. And I've been known NOT to turn off Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. AND I like the Sweeney Todd grade school talent show scene in Jersey Girl. *Now hangs head in guilty shame*

I don't think you should feel guilty about that - especially if you've read the book. It's probably one of my favourite books, and I bought the DVD as well.

But... I also adore old musicals.

I don't feel guilty about anything I like.

BTW, Chokky, I also like the recent Dr. Who. I assume you've seen the previous series with Christopher Eccleston? I also think Billie Piper makes an excellent assistant.

I've learned to love romantic comedies and chick flicks as I get more cuddles from my wife after watching these than say Chuck Norris or Jean Clod Van Dumbe.

The Princess Bride is one of my favourite films ever.

While not a big Kevin Smith fan, I actually enjoyed Jersey Girl although Bennifer1's other film, Gigli was like watching a train wreck.

Way back, when I was a kid, our Public Broadcasting Station in Chicago (Channel 11) ran at least one series of Dr. Who. I don't remember who played the doctor, but I remember he had a long, pointy beard that was mostly gray but with a small dark patch at just the chin. We loved it back then. But time went on, PBS stopped showing the series and I forgot all about it until they started showing the Christopher Eccleston ones. My younger son and I were hooked (I think he likes Billy Piper as well, but not because of her acting - wink, wink). When we watched last night, my son was a bit unhappy with Tennant, but I told him to keep watching and keep an open mind. Yes, Piper is very good here.

(But I must admit that I started to get a touch bored with the Christopher Eccleston ones until John Barrowman came into the series. Oh, he is HOT! I hope they bring "Torchwood" here.)

re: Dr Who
Didja know Douglas Adams was once one of the writers?!
CL: I don't think any of the docs had a beard, but I suspect William Hartnell or Patrick Troughton was the Who you mean. But you can verify here!

BTW: Barrowman may indeed be HOT, but since he and his longterm partner have recently celebrated their civil partnership, I doubt you'd be his type!

No, the image in my head is of Peter Cushing, apparently. Moustache must have been replaced by a beard over time in my head. But I think the series we saw was with Jon Pertwee.

You know, I really don't care if he's my type or not. What is good to look at is good to look at, period!

Have thought about this, and despite my catholic upbringing, I rarely feel guilty about watching something if i think it's good, cos I'll defend it to the hilt if anyone gives me grief!! I do have one guilty pleasure though.. I'm such a nerd...

It's Star Trek movies... and I know it's nerdy and immature and stupid, but I can't help it. I'm a sucker for a good franchise (I really enjoyed Rocky Balboa recently)

But not all of them are good, far from it! The ones I'll include in the list are:
Wrath of Khan
Search for Spock
VI (Kirk and McCoy go to the gulag)
Generations (proper guilty pleasure that one)
First Contact (Borg on big screen, class)
Nemesis was ok.

End of confession.

There's nothing wrong with Star Trek. I've liked it as far back as I can remember. It's good, entertaining Sci-Fi.
