There's nothing wrong with Star Trek. I've liked it as far back as I can remember. It's good, entertaining Sci-Fi.
Ditto. I usually like the movies. I even liked the one with the whales. As far as TV series, it's ST:TNG, then ST:Voyager, then ST:DSP. I've seen all the original, but they tend to be too dated for my taste. As an aside, I have a vinyl covered Star Trek Technical Manual covering the original Enterprise, published in about 1975. When I was first starting to collect autographs, I went to a convention in Indy where Leonard Nimoy was appearing and all ready to get my book signed after he spoke. Then they announced he wasn't going to be signing autographs. We decided to leave and when we got to the parking lot, we saw a black limousine waiting about 6 feet from a door. I was fairly positive who it was for. Being the brash person I am, I trod over by the door. In a short time, Nimoy came out and I asked him if he would sign my book and held it up. As luck would have it, at that moment it started to rain. Nimoy asked me to sit in the car, he wanted to look at the book. We spent about 20 minutes in there and he turned out to be a delightful man. Later on, I found out the story had circulated amongst the autograph collecting world as my being the only person in that year's appearance who got a Nimoy autograph. And I still have that book.

I have a deep and long-standing passion for circa 90's high-concept action movies. As a matter of fact, my interest in film got started by Speed. There's just something about them ... in the 80's they were too macho and in the 00's they were too self-conscious and slick, but in the 90's they were just about right.
Some of them I will defend as good films - Speed, breakdown, Die Hard (which is a 90's action flick by temperament if not by numerology). Then again, there are the ones like Sudden Death, which I watched yesterday with a beer. So kitschy, it's transcendant. Any movie where the closest van Damme gets to being killed is in a fight with a woman in a giant penguin costume is some kind of classic.

I don't think Dogma counts as a "guilty" pleasure... whether it is or not, I enjoy it very much. My daughter, when she was 17, was spending the summer working as an apprentice horse trainer for a friend of ours. When our friend was out of town at horse shows, my daughter had the whole house to herself.
So, one day she was watching Dogma. Into the house walk (w/o knocking) a family who were lesson clients of our friend. The mother made it very clear that she disapproved of my daughter watching Dogma. Which made it all the more fun to watch.
A guilty pleasure for me is watching Moulin Rouge. Damn, it is hypnotic. Another guilty pleasure is Conan the Destroyer. It is sooooooo bad!!!!! Bad, bad, bad, bad. But I've seen it hundreds of times. Why? Because when my kids were little, they liked it and just about wore the tape out. My daughter pronounced the title, "Conan the Destwoyer." |

Alice Krige was super outstanding as the Borg Queen. My favorite fwfr of the film is "Alien queen strangely sexy" by Clyndu (who has two published reviews). That review inspired me to write, "Borg Data strangely sexy." She is surely one of the most beautiful women on the planet, with an equally lovely voice. Perhaps I should go back that "underrated" thread and post her name there.

I can't picture that reaction happening anywhere outside of America. At least, not an "enlightened" country outside of America.
I'm pretty sure Jesus never said anything about a sense of humor being a sin. It's amazing what people will allow themselves to get offended at. |

Have thought about this, and despite my catholic upbringing, I rarely feel guilty about watching something if i think it's good, cos I'll defend it to the hilt if anyone gives me grief!! I do have one guilty pleasure though.. I'm such a nerd...
It's Star Trek movies... and I know it's nerdy and immature and stupid, but I can't help it. I'm a sucker for a good franchise (I really enjoyed Rocky Balboa recently)
But not all of them are good, far from it! The ones I'll include in the list are: Wrath of Khan Search for Spock VI (Kirk and McCoy go to the gulag) Generations (proper guilty pleasure that one) First Contact (Borg on big screen, class) Nemesis was ok.
End of confession.
You "confess" to this as if enjoying a franchise that's endured for over 40 years is something to be embarrassed about. Obviously you're not alone.
The only part of your "confession" that's shocking is that you don't seem to like Star Trek IV ("the one with the whales") and you thought Nemesis was "ok." That movie was such a hack job from Berman and his minions...it's a product of sheer laziness on the part of the writers and and producers. As a fan I honestly felt betrayed when it was over. To make such a big deal about "this is the final voyage" and then wrap things up with that...ugh. I better stop here.
Now HERE'S a guilty pleasure! http://www.stardestroyer.net/Nemesis/Pictorial-1.html |

Here's one: "Flesh Gordon."
Complete with Craig T. Nelson (also known as TV's 'Coach,' among other things) making an appearance (uncredited, wonder why?)
I rented this back when my wife and I were first dating - and this was at the time that you had to specify if you wanted VHS or Beta, and I had to leave a $75 deposit to cover the tape if I didn't return it.
We went to a party or something and when I came home my parents were watching it with some of their friends. |

Yikes! Maybe i should start off this response with the statement: "I like Star Trek"!
However, i think it's important to distinguish science fiction movies that are completely defendable (if that's a word), such as 'A Scanner Darkly' or 'Primer' or 'Pi' from the more mainstream, easily digested, character-driven stuff like star trek or, to a lesser extent, serenity... The difference being, you need to like the star trek characters to buy into the movies.. i have a lot of friends who dont watch many movies at all.. for them to buy into star trek takes a whole lot of effort, whereas to take the mickey is a whole lot easier... but with a movie like 'Pi' or 'Scanner Darkly', they're vaguely aware that it's a brilliant movie that just happens to be science fiction...
Personal context here people, sorry! The thread was called 'guilty pleasures' though!! I've taken a lot of abuse over the years for liking star trek, maybe that's where the guilt comes from! I know i get viewing pleasure from them though, even from the nemesis movie, where data gets dead.. Number 4 was ok though, Spock in San Francisco was funny... but maybe you're right downtown, B4? in 'Nemesis'!? What's that about!? |

It's just popular and fun to make fun of Star Trek fans, just like it's fun for fans of certain sports teams to make fun of fans of the rival. It doesn't matter if the jokes are true or not. But Trek is mostly very entertaining. And the films that were the greatest commercial successes were so because they were written in such a way that they were approachable by anyone, fan or novice. Wrath of Khan isn't even really about Kirk and company, it focuses on a character that only appeared in one episode of classic Trek. It's basically Moby Dick in space, and it's bleeping awesome.
Putting us properly back on topic, I love really trashy B-grade (or maybe Z-grade) disaster and apocalyptic movies and other assorted film refuse like C.H.U.D.
I also like Police Academy movies. |

some of my guilty pleasures: "Equilibrium," though i hated "Ultraviolet." almost anything with DiCaprio and Costner. i always say how much i dislike those actors, but damn they are in some fine films, so i suffer them. a bunch of Hong Kong, Category III films, like "Naked Killer," "Dr. Lamb" and "Robotrix." "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," f-ing hilarious. and finally, i don't think this qualifies as a movie, but, "Brawlin' Broads." completely iredeemable. i think i've rented it four times, at least twice on VHS. somebody loved the DVD more than me.
here's the disclaimer from their web site: "The following website features a video of such unparalleled entertainment value that it has been known to be more addictive than crack. And coincidentally the hosts of this video, the Boone Brothers, have been known to smoke a little crack from time to time. The video has also been blamed for helping to set mankind back several hundred years in collective intelligence. And maybe even being a strong sign of the coming apocalypse. The producers of Brawlin' Broads believe all of this to be true. So if you find rowdy rednecks, gratuitous violence, tasteless humor and excessive drug and alcohol use offensive--leave now. Those of you with nuts in your sack, enter." |

TREK: TOS, absolutely. Even-numbered features until about 8. It's sorta guilty...
This has become a very enjoyable thread, and has sent me back to the Netflix queue more than once. Don't take the word "guilty" too seriously: the emphasis should be on "pleasure." You all know what I'm talkin' about.
Keep 'em coming!
EDIT: Mamps, I love DODGEBALL too. Every time that stupid referee starts the action in the big tournament by doing that chopping motion and yelling, "Dodgeball!", I give it up. Every time! It's like them pushing the van in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE -- the gag never gets old! |

I just thought of one! 'The Aristocrats'! That film is very naughty, but absolutely compelling. I've never seen more people leave a cinema before the end of a movie.. I'd say 60-70%.. but what a movie, that thing is unique, and a total guilty pleasure for me.
BTW, I brought a date to see that movie I think she was expecting the cartoon

I've got another guilty pleasure - old Disney animated films. My favourites are:
101 Dalmations Lady & the Tramp Sleeping Beauty Cinderella Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs Pinoccio Bambi Alice in Wonderland
I also enjoy some of the slightly newer ones:
Aladdin Little Mermaid Beauty & the Beast Hercules
(And I'm a sucker for that silly Danny Kaye Hans Christian Anderson movie.)
