It could possibly cover a number of films that have broad themes but what makes it specific to this movie is that it covers the period of rapid expansion of the US into the West, trappers, civil war, the Indian wars, gold rush and the coming of the railroad and 'civilisation'. And it's in the widest screen format you will ever see. Throughout much of the film you can actually see, very faintly, the joins of the 3 sections ( think 3 widescreen TV's side by side and you get the idea) that it was filmed in.
If the technical aspects of a movie (aspect ratio etc) are acceptable enough (no idea if they are or not), then this would be worth a resub. IMDb says this was 2.75:1 which would make it one of the widest films ever made, and very likely the widest Western.

A lot of my declined reviews are considered "too generic" or "similar to another review"

Fourth Blood for Rambo IV
Heads Will Roll for Apocalypto

but some got declined with no explanation given:

Banderas Saves Boring Retread for Shrek 2
COCK-ney for Alfie (the original)
It's a Talkie for Babel

The Babel review is a bit of a stretch - you could apply it to a lot of very dialogue heavy films, but it seemed apt considering the movie's themes and its title.

They also turned down my review for the Tom Cruise/Spielberg
War of the Worlds: Welles' Wells Was Weller - for being "too generic"

I dunno - maybe it is just sour grapes.
I also had P-p-p-pick up a penguin for Marhc of the Penguins declined

That sounds like a case of simply not explaining it clearly enough, since it's the fourth film a series that began with "First Blood." Try making it more obvious, there's always the chance they had no idea "First Blood" is the official name of the first film in the series. If need be, you can change it to a play on the alternate title of the first film: "Rambo: Fourth Blood." A final option is "First Blood: Part IV," which would be a play on the title of the first sequel. But I really think you can fix this just by explaining the original review a little better.

I also find the no decline reason to be very frustrating, and never did get an answer as to why it happens and seems to be happening more frequently. It's particularly distressing since I expressed a fear that they're being declined because someone simply didn't find them entertaining enough or thought they were offensive, and nobody even bothered to say, "no, that would never happen." But it's very hard to fix something when you don't know what's wrong with it.

No, Mr Whippy - you're the only one who has good reviews. Honest. You are. Everyone knows it, too!

I am deeply touched by your obvious sincerity.

Bafta, thank you for your feedback. Speaking strictly from a U.S. perspective, "brogue" pretty much exclusively refers to an Irish accent. There may be other plotlines involving gay Irishmen, but certainly Oscar Wilde rises to the forefront...so to speak. I've always held that overlapping themes from different movies makes it downright impossible to have a review pinpoint just one movie. The common way to do be utmost specific is to use an actor's name in the review, and that frequently drains out the poetry.

I don't think your review is particularly generic, and I'd really doubt that it was rejected for that reason, but, as best I can tell without having seen the film, I wonder about its accuracy or relevance. Always bear in mind that the wittiness of a review may get you the votes, but it won't help to get it accepted.

My advice, for what its worth, is to always consider the review in an entirely literal way. OK, I accept that the main meaning of brogue is an Irish accent, but is Wilde's accent important to the film? (Is he even played with an Irish accent?) Does Wilde go back to the mountains? Are there any mountains? If you wrote this review for a film about a gay Irishman who returned to the mountains then it would be accepted, but otherwise it's going into your reject pile.

That's the way it works around here.

You're very welcome, Cat! Yep, I agree Wilde's the one you prob'ly think of [and, btw, I AM American] but if you really deconstruct your review there are sidebar issues -- apart from extrapolating Oscar to all Irishmen [let alone that his accent, being of the upper class wasn't all that brogue-y -- was it PaddyC and Beanmimo? to whose judgement I will bow], such as the following, and no I'm not nit-picking:
1. There's no mountain in Wilde.
2. Both Wilde and Brokeback Mountain are about far more than homosexuality, though I admit the themes emanate from the gay relationship in each. But they are different themes.
3. What you're saying with your review is that the quintessential factor in Wilde is its comparison with a very different genre of film which also happens to feature a gay relationship even though that's the only thing the two films have in common -- never mind that the one you quote in your review was made afterward.

In short, I just don't think your FWFR is specific enough -- and, please forgive me, I honestly don't think you'd be losing any poetry if you tweaked it cleverly. Which I have every faith you can!

Of course, you must realize I'm in no way an authority on ANYTHING about this site, except that I love it!

Have you tried re-submitting with an explanation?

I quite like the Alfie one, similar theme to other reviews for this film (cheeky cockney puts it about a bit )but condensed to a single/double word. Definately worth another try.

Comments?

A long, long time ago, before benj's trip to the Underworld to sire MERPs, I had "Cinerama epic ultimate oater" declined for HTWWW. I kept it in my ever-growing list of reviews that did not make it for over a year and then came back with "Cinerama oater tracks families" Bingo.

Billy the Kid (1930) was directed by King Vidor in an early 70mm process.

Geezer footnote--I saw HTWWW when it first was shown in Cinerama. Sure was big. The original three-camera Cinerama never really caught on because the seams in the screen were distracting.

Well, bowing to the insight of Whipper and Bafta, two esteemed veterans on the nuances of review approval, I hereby vow to stop kvetching about the decline of my "brogueback" riff. I saw "Wilde" when it was out on the big screen, but I can't remember what kind of accent, if any, Stephen Fry employed for the role.

"Fourth Blood" for Rambo IV
That's an exact copy of the highest voted review for that movie. Surely you don't think the same review should be allowed on the page twice?

An almost exact copy of bife's review.

It makes sense to check the movie page (use your browser's Find feature, it only takes a few seconds) to see if a review has already been used before submitting. I do for every review I submit.

Well, don't I feel like a son of a bitch, as Jack Nicholson says in A Few Good Men.

Your point is well-made; i will be more prudent in checking other reviews in the future.

No worries! I checked for the Rambo one, as I would've been surprised if it wasn't already there, and I remembered the Penguin one.
