This is certainly the nature of spoken language. The arguments don't really apply in the same way to the artificial construction that is writing. Some variants in spelling do of course occasionally take over from others, but these are usually 'simpler' in some way, which is not the case here. Also, spelling modification, conscious or otherwise, is a bad thing in that it makes texts from the past less accessible. |

I stand by what I said and how. You are particularly prone to sweeping announcements, so I am sure that you cannot but agree that what one says is by definition only what one thinks.
quote: Get a hold of yourself, pal. You are not the arbiter extraordinaire of, and the chief authority in, all those aspects of life (such as language, homosexuality etc) in which you are particularly interested.
Don't call me pal. I talk about what I know about, whereas others talk about anything, regardless of what they know. I have not suggested that I am the arbiter of anything (as I have pointed out before when Josh has previously made his policeman point). In everything that I said in the lengthy offensive-vocabulary thread, I backed it up, whereas other arguments came down to "That's just how it is." In this instance, I was perfectly happy to state as a fact something presented as such by standard dictionaries. These are not arbiters either; they just reflect language accurately. An apostrophe has a meaning, i.e. that part is missing - nothing is being missed out when one says till. If you are suggesting that apostrophes have now got a new usage, that of randomly decorating words, well, that is up to you.
quote: And always remember: The necessity to communicate dictates grammar, and not the other way round.
This is obvious, at best beside the point and at worst counter to it. Arbitrarily changing spellings over time can only hinder communication, as it leads to different people (contemporaries or otherwise) using different forms. |

Let's discuss this over here. |

It's not in my 2002 edition, but I think it's very likely that it's in now. I think it's a useful word because it makes people who like bling and use the word seem ridiculous. |

Single White Female (1992) This time, Leigh's psycho.
Short Cuts (1993) Altman: c'est L.A. vie
I second this compliment--in fact, Chazbo got 5 for 5 from me this round!
(Sorry my five were not necessarily up to snuff but I have some approvals finally trickling through so I should have better ones next round!) |

Yukon.
Interesting review for The Omen, "Brat out of hell". I deleted this exact review from my pending pile in 2004 when I saw that Mr Stupid had the same review for Little Nicky.
And we were both surprised to find that Rovark had beaten us both with the same review on Psychomania.
So sorry for not voting for it. |

Sorry, folks. I came to check on movie review votes. Apparently, I stepped into a nasty language debate string. . . .
I'll come back and check again. |
