Interesting theory, but I really don't think that MERPs are allowed to approve their own reviews.

I can no longer hold my tongue. 
Months back, there was a programming error on the site and it accidentally allowed access to something akin to a "review approvals room." 
It showed a list of the pending reviews from everyone in increments of 100. Next to each review was twelve columns for votes. I assume this is how the MERPs make their decision.  At the top of each column were initials and/or abbreviations, which I presume indicated the identities of the MERPs.
The initials PKMN were atop one of those columns. 
That suggests to me that MrBadIdea is right: PKMN is a MERP!  And that means that he posts these threads to do exactly what MBI has suggested: merely to generate compliments for his ilk from we good-natured lemmings when in fact we should be castigating those lazy swine! 
I'M NOT YOUR YOUR MENTAL TOY, PKMN!!! I'M ON TO YOU!!!! IF YOU WANT MERPING COMPLIMENTS, THEN MERPING DO YOUR MERPING JOB, AND MAYBE SOMEONE WILL START A MERPING THREAD FOR WELL-EARNED PRAISE INSTEAD OF THIS TRANSPARENT ATTEMPT AT MERP SELF-PROMOTION!!!!!!

I get a trickle of a few approved reviews each week. My pending list is now up to about 60, which I think is quite high for me.
I'm happy to just let the MERPeople be as they swim about in our sea of pending reviews ... as long as they don't come up for air too often.
